If the unit is under warranty...DON'T DO THIS.

open up the unit and remove the hard disk.
If you have a desktop, connect the drive like you would any other hard disk.
If the drive does NOT show up under My Compujter, then the format is proprietary, and all you can do is back up the drive with a program like Acronis True Image (you must have more free space on your hard disk than the DVR's drive size...if the DVR has a 500G hard disk, you need 500G of free space on your desktop drive).
If the drive DOES show up with a drive letter under Computer, then create a directory on the C drive and simply drag and drop all the files from the DVR hard disk (E: or whatever it makes itself) to this folder. The files may still be in a proprietary format and unplayable though.
If you are trying to play the files on the computer, I suggest using VLC player. It plays almost everything in the universe.

Replace all power supply's capacitors that are on the secondary.

Sounds like the hard disk might be full. How many recordings have you got on the machine? You say it won't allow you to delete "data". Have you protected the recordings?

Try to use a cd cleaner or if you are familiar in electronic troubleshooting unplug the unit, then remove the cover, use a cotton buds and wipe the optical lens be careful not to touch the lens, and you can also check the flex wire try to unplug and plug the flex, to remove the flex wire observe the connector both edge you will see a plastic clip that holds the flex wire try to pull it, but be careful you may damage the connector if you use force. You have probably found out now that you would need to get your digital reception by connecting a set top box to the LG, say to AV1, then select AV1 when making a recording.

make sure the disk is finalised after recording, if this does not help then the bit-rate it uses for xp may not be compatable with other dvd players, in which case stick to sp,lp or dual-layer sp is best if ou can.
