my tv shuts off after a few seconds what can i do to fix it

Check DTV's site to see if they have updated the code lists for your respective remotes.
I have two newer sets for which there are no codes too.

Seems like the term 'multibrand' remote might be more accurate than the common 'universal.'

This TV can't understand a laptop signal directly (for most laptops - there are some computers that have a TV out option). The EWL20D6 has S-video, component and composite video inputs. Your best picture will be to get a VGA (RGB) to Component Video (YPbPr) converter with a 3.5 mm to RCA L/R audio cable. The VGA to component video cable is meant for projectors that can interpret the RGB signal, not TVs.

If your laptop has an HDMI port, you will need a different type of converter.

Once you have the correct hardware, you will need to make sure that the external video port is active on your laptop. For some machines, you may need to enable this in the BIOS first (press Esc, F1, F2 or F10 (depending on the computer) on bootup to get to the BIOS - it may take a few tries to time it correctly). Then turn off the TV and computer before connecting the cables. Then turn on the TV and set it to the desired input before turning on the laptop. Then set the laptop to send the video signal to the external monitor. (On my Win7 laptop, I right-click on the Desktop and select Graphic Properties. Then set the desired display (laptop screen, external monitor, both) and click Apply. Then press OK when you see the confirmation box on the now active screen.)

HI, Are you sure that there is balck dot on the sreen. Check one more time is it any dust on the screen. Black spot Means pixel of the Lcd sreen is fault. There are thousands of pixels in an lcd screen. when any of the pixel or a group of pixels become faulty the black spot will appear. Its not possile to rectify the problem other than replacing the LCD panle if its avilable. The avilability of lcd screen is very rare. Ajin

So many factors could be affecting your reception. Keep in mind that the digital signal is all or nothing, either you have a signal or you don't, with the regular signal you can pull in weak signals but you can't with digital. Your converter box when turned on will probably not pick up the standard signal. The distance from the digital signal and the direction the antenna is facing also will affect your signal.
Ok with that said you will have to clear the path between the broadcast signal and your antenna, I know this will be a chore but take your antanna out of the attic and put it outside as a test only, this dosnt mean you cant have it in the attic it will just be a signal test.

What does a remote have to do with the original answer....dumb asses!

Have you checked the power supply board for bad capacitors? they will be vented or puffed up on top, 1000uf 16v 2200uf 10v 3300uf 10v

We would be happy to help. We currently do not have anycodes specifically for your Emerson TV/DVD combo unit, but we would recommend performing apower scan. If there is a code that is compatible with your TV, the power scanwill find it. Power scan instructions:

Step 1:
Press and hold the TV mode button until all mode button back lights illuminate,then release.

Step 2:
Press and release the Power button.

Step 3:
Press the Up button once a second while pointing the remote at the TV. If the code for the TV comes up, the TV will turnoff.

Step 4:
Press the pound (#) button. If the code entered is valid for the remote, themode light flashes three times.

Hello mash..... It is important to get the correct stand so do this. Go to your local emerson dealer and see what models are available and what they cost. Do not hesitate to take notes and or pictures of what is recommended. Then you can purchase one there or go on line in hopes of finding a better price. Joe

LCD display screen is bad. Time to go Christmas shopping again. I'm sorry having to give you the bad news.

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Which audio output ports of the TV are you using? More likely you will need powered speakers system same as use in PC and use the audio line out of the TV to feed it. You cannot use just the plain speakers since the TV may not have speaker level outputs to drive the speakers directly.
