that printers drivers has had issues with xp since xp was released. good luck getting it printing in colour. I couldnt and i have been repairing computers for 28 years

Check the printer properties to make sure it isn't printing in black and white only.

HP did not release a driver for any version of Windows higher than XP

You will need to manually load the XP drivers for your printer.

To safe guard against improper ink usage, it is possible that HP cartiridges will fail upon ink injection.

This is done to help save the printer from being damaged by using the wrong ink. Ink has a certain "thickness" or vescosity (to be technical). If the ink is too thick or not thick enough it can cause problems for the heads within the printer (the little parts that put the ink to the paper). If this is the case the heads can clog or drip which, in the end, causes problems for the printer and not just the cartridge. Problems with the printer will cost more money in the end.

Purchase an HP brand cartridge to replace the one within the printer.

You'll need to run it through the maintenance mode to check for print alighnment and cleaning the heads and rollers. Do it two or three times to ensure all is clear.

Then try scanning again.

sorry to inform you but hp does not provide drivers for the windows 7 platform for this particular product.

the seal you peel off has to be removed, so -- no , you did not do anything wrong or damage anything

and yes, after 6-9 months, ink cartridges have a an expiration date
they do not work, as the ink gets hard and canmnot be used.

buy new ink cartridges.. if its a bran new out oif the box item, just replace the consumables -- in this case the ink cartridges.

There are no official drivers for the T45 in Vista. You can, however, use the Officejet R45 drivers instead. It seems to work well, and supports color printing.
