Introduction Your printer requires minimum routine maintenance. This chapter explains the following tasks
- Cleaning the printer
- The toner cartridge
- Extending toner cartridge life
- Clearing a TONER LOW message
- Replacing printer parts
Cleaning the printer To maintain print quality, thoroughly clean your printer:
- Every time you change the toner cartridge
- After printing approximately 6,000 pages
- Whenever print quality problems occur
Clean the outside of the printer with a lightly water-dampened cloth. Clean the inside with only a dry,lint-free cloth. Observe the warnings and cautions that follow the cleaning tasks on the following pages.
Caution To avoid permanent damage to the toner cartridge, do not use ammonia-based cleaners on or around your printer.
Printer Cleaning Tasks Before you begin these steps, turn the printer OFF and unplug the power cord.
Caution Do not touch the transfer roller (black sponge-rubber roller) with your fingers. Skin oils on the roller can cause print quality problems.
If toner gets on your clothes, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash your clothes in
cold water. Hot water sets toner into fabric.
Warning Avoid touching the adjacent fusing area. It may be HOT
- OPen the printer's top cover and remove the toner cartridge
- with a dry lint-free cloth, wipe any residue off the Paper Access Cover (it has a green handle) and the adjacent silver metal strip.
- Wipe any dust or dirt off the black plastic Paper Feed Guide with a dry, lint-free cloth.

User-Replaceable Parts Some worn parts can be replaced by the owner. See Chapter 8, "Solving Printer Problems", for descriptions of the difficulties that can indicate when to replace a part.
Warning Switch OFF and unplug the printer before replacing parts. Failure to do so may result in personal injury or damage to the printer. After switching the printer OFF and unplugging the power cord, allow the printer to cool for 30 minutes before replacing the parts.
Unless specifically noted,
replacement is the reverse of removal. Always carefully observe the position and alignment of the part you are removing; this is your best guide to replacement.
