"Cartridges missing" message problem

Hi,Probably the ink cartridge is defective and the only way you can solve this is try with another cartridge.Remove both the cartridges and insert them one-after-another to check which cartridges might be defective based on the blinking lights.Call HP Support to check if they can replace the defective cartridge for you ( only if you are using Genuine HP Cartridge )Regards,Sean

HP Officejet 9110 empty or expired cartridge error

You were a bit vague in your report as to what the exact error is that you are plagued with. Perhaps you have more than one. The 9100’s ink cartridges are “smart cartridges.” They each have a chip in them that reports various cartridge statuses directly to the printer. Diagnosing the problem correctly requires the identification of the particular error message. You can find a list of the error messages and what they mean here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=376170&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=376170&objectID=c00067620

I think that you are experiencing an “INK CARTRIDGE EXPIRED” error. This error is not related to the ‘volume’ of the ink within the cartridge(s) but rather to the actual expiration ‘date(s)’ on the cartridge(s). The expiration date is encoded on the chip that resides on the cartridge. The actual expiration date appears to relate to the date two years after the date that is stamped on the cartridge label. I can’t change the expiration date on the chip—at least not easily or inexpensively—but I have discovered a way around it.

The date on the cartridge corresponds to the date on the printer itself. You just need to send the printer back in time to a period before the expiration date and you should be able to print again. A time machine is probably out of the question. Instead, reset the date on the printer to reflect a suitable date.

This could conceivably have some negative consequences that I haven’t experienced yet. I’ve only just discovered this ‘hack’. Though I haven’t tested it, the newly assigned, incorrect date will probably appear on any subsequently received fax transmissions. I can also conceive of networking issues if your printer is networked. Some network related instructions require that all network nodes (all devices on the network—computers, printers, etc.) report a time (and date) within just a few minutes of each other to communicate. You’ll just have to try it in your network and see if everything functions properly or within acceptable limits.

To change the date on the 9100 printer, you’ll need to access the ‘Maintenance’ menu. Just below the LCD panel on the front of the printer there are a series of buttons as follows:

[Return], [Up] & [Down], [Accept], [Left], and [Right]. They each have their own unique symbol, but I’m sure you can understand my descriptions. Press and hold BOTH, the [Up] and the [Down] buttons at the same time while you press and release the [Accept] button—then release the other two buttons. If you weren’t taken directly to the ‘Maintenance’ menu (# 10), then use the [Up] or [Down] arrow button to navigate to it and then choose the [Accept] button to select it. Similarly select the ‘Set date and time’ option, and follow the prompts to make the necessary changes using the appropriate buttons.

Once you have changed the date and time you may have to turn the printer off and then back on again before the printer will recognize the cartridge(s). In my case, the printer went through an extensive print head alignment.

Good luck!

Scanner Locked Error

Scanner Lock -- a possible quicker fix

Instead of removing the entire glass plate, just remove the narrow glass strip to the far left. To do this, open the scanner top revealing the glass, and remove the philips screw centered on the left edge. With a thin flat-head screwdriver or even a good set of fingernails, you can then pry out the thin U-shaped plastic piece holding the glass strip in place.

When you remove the glass strip, you now have (narrow but sufficient) access to the scanner pulley and belt. Pull the spring-loaded pulley back towards your right to get some slack on the belt, then remove the belt from the pulley.

This frees up the scanner head, which you can now slide manually (by pulling gently on one end of the belt and giving slack on the other) to a center position well away from the scanner lock. When I first tried, I didn't move the scanner head far enough -- to the middle or beyond seems sufficient.

Push the scan lock to the full lock and then the full unlock position, to make sure it is now free.

Using fingers, screwdriver, and/or pliers, re-seat the belt on the pulley, once again using the freedom to move the spring-loaded pulley a bit to the right.

Replace the glass strip, plastic cover, and screw.

Power on the scanner. The error message should now be gone, and the scanner head should slide back to its resting position on startup (unless something is caught underneath, which was apparently the case for some who had this problem but was not the case for me). If the first power cycle doesn't do the trick, another power cycle might be helpful.

This approach eliminates the need to remove the scanner lid, control panel, and scanner glass.

Reoved jammed paper now says

That small plastic line is called a ribbon cable and it is vital to the printhead. You need to re-insert it into its clip and the close the clip. This is why the printer is producing the error. You can start with the instructions below and we will move from there:

  • Turn on the all-in-one.
  • Open the print-carriage access door.
  • Lift the printhead latch forward and down to release the hook from the metal latch.
  • Lift and push the latch toward the rear of the all-in-one.
  • Make sure each printhead is fitted into its respective color-coded socket.
  • Press in each printhead to ensure proper contact.
  • Lift the latch forward so that the hook catches the metal latch.
  • Push the latch towards the rear of the printer. It should snap into place.
  • Close the print-carriage access door.

I took my OfficeJet 9110

It is called a Service Module, but it is no longer available for this model. I have checked everywhere online and they no longer carry it at any part location, or anywhere.

Also, the part itself is quite expensive, it is more than a replacement all in one equivalent printer would cost. I would recommend you just replace it with something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036TGGJG?ie=UTF8&tag=dependascient-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0036TGGJG

It is $79, with free shipping - it's smaller, faster printing, more ink efficient, wireless and wired, and capable of everything your current model does and more... There is definitely no reason to try and repair your printer.

Thanks so much, sorry about the grim news there. Let me know if you have any other questions about this, just reply here.

Thanks
Tim
