After
you print a test page and establish a baseline print speed for your HP
product, you determine that computer issues cause slow printing.
Solution one: Check minimum system requirementsThe
most common cause of slow printing is a computer that runs at or near
its system resource limit. Follow these steps to make sure that your
computer has enough system resources to process timely print jobs.
Step one: Make sure that the computer meets RAM requirementsThe
amount of available random access memory (RAM) can affect print speed.
Follow these steps to make sure that the available RAM exceeds the
minimum requirement for the HP product.
- Open the computer Properties
window:
- Windows XP
: Click Start

), right-click My Computer
, and then click Properties
.
- Windows Vista or Windows 7
: On the Windows task bar, click the Windows icon (
), right-click Computer
, and then click Properties
.
- Find the available RAM and make a note of it:
- Windows XP
: Click the General
tab, if it is not already selected. Find the amount of RAM in the list with the other Computer
specifications.
- Windows Vista or Windows 7
: Find the Memory (RAM)
in the System
section.
- Check
the system requirements for your product, listed in the product manual

specific requirements for your HP product, look in the manual or on the
box. Or, you can follow these steps to check the product specifications
online:

Step two: Make sure that the computer hard drive has enough free spaceThe
amount of available hard drive space can affect print speed. Follow
these steps to make sure that the available hard drive space exceeds the
minimum requirement for the HP product.
- Open the My Computer
window:

- Windows Vista or Windows 7

- Right-click on the drive containing your operating system, typically (C:)

- If the free disk space is near or under the minimum requirement listed in the table above, click Disk Cleanup
to free up disk space.
Step three: Make sure that the computer meets CPU requirementsIf
the computer does not meet CPU requirements, the print speed might be
affected. Follow these steps to make sure that the computer meets the
minimum CPU requirements.
- Open the computer Properties
window:
- Windows XP
: Click Start

), right-click My Computer
, and then click Properties
.
- Windows Vista or Windows 7
: On the Windows task bar, click the Windows icon (
), right-click Computer
, and then click Properties
.
- Find the CPU specifications and make a note of it:
- Windows XP
: Click the General
tab, if it is not already selected. Find the computer processor information with the other Computer
specifications.
- Windows Vista or Windows 7
: Find the computer processor information in the System

- Print and time a self-test page again.
- If these steps resolved the issue

Solution two: Close unnecessary programs and processesFollow these steps to close all unnecessary programs to try to speed up printing.
Step one: Close all unnecessary programs - Press and hold the Ctrl
+ Alt
+ Delete
keys on the keyboard.The Windows Security
dialog box opens.
- Click the Task Manager
button in the Windows Security dialog box. The Windows Task Manager
dialog box opens.NOTE:If the Windows Task Manager
dialog box does not open, right-click on the task bar and select Task Manager
.
- In the Windows Task Manager
dialog box, select a software program from the Applications
tab, and then click End Task
to close the program.
- Repeat the previous step until you have closed all unnecessary programs.
Step two: Close any unnecessary processesProcesses run in the background even when no applications are in use. Follow these steps to end unnecessary processes.
- Return to the Windows Task Manager
that you opened in the previous step.
- Click the Processes
tab.
- Select the process to end, and then click End Process
.NOTE:If another window opens and indicates that the task has stopped responding, click End Task
.
- Repeat the preceding step to end all unnecessary processes.NOTE:You cannot end critical system processes.
- Print and time a self-test page again.
- If these steps resolved the issue

Solution three: Check the print settingsPrint settings can affect print times. Follow these steps to check the settings for paper type and print quality.
- Open the Printers
folder:
- Windows XP
: Click Start

), and then click Printers and Faxes
.
- Windows Vista
: Click the Windows icon (
), click Control Panel
, and then double-click Printers
.
- Windows 7
: Click the Windows icon (
), click Control Panel
, and then double-click Printers & Devices
.
- Right-click the icon for your product (

- On the General
tab, click Printing Preferences
. The Printing Preferences dialog box opens.
- Click the Paper/Quality
tab.
- Click the drop-down list under Media
, and then select Plain Paper
.
- In the Quality Settings
section, select Normal

- Click Apply
in the Printing Preferences
dialog box to save the settings, and then click OK
to close the dialog box.
- In the Properties
dialog box, on the General
tab, click Print Test Page
. The product prints a test page.

Solution four: Remove and reinstall the HP softwareThere
might be a more current driver available for your HP product. HP
recommends that you use the latest version to correct printing problems.
Follow these steps to remove the HP software, and then reinstall it.
Step one: Remove the HP software- Unplug the USB cable connecting the product to the computer.
- Open the Windows Control Panel

- Windows Vista or Windows 7
: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (

.
The Control Panel
window opens. - Open the list of installed programs and remove the software.
- Windows XP
: Double-click Add/Remove Programs
. In the list of installed programs, click the HP product, and then click Add/Remove
.
- Windows Vista or Windows 7
: Click Programs
. In the list of installed programs, click the HP product, and then click Uninstall
.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.CAUTION:If asked to remove shared files, click No
. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
- Disconnect the product from the power source, and then restart the computer.
Step two: Download and reinstall the HP softwareIMPORTANT:
If you receive any third-party firewall messages during installation (for example, a message from McAfee), click

. Otherwise the software installation fails.
- Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
- Turn the product on.
- Browse to the Get Software and Drivers
page:

- Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
- Click the Plus sign (
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download.
- Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions

- Click Download
. This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
- Click Save
, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
- Click Save
. The software downloads to your computer.Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
