Yes format the memory card. Go into the camera's Menu and select Foemat memory card.

Sounds crazy but just make sure yo have removed the lens cover. If it does not work then something is wrong with your Panasonic and i would immediately return it for a another new unit that works properly. You might want to check manual to see if you are doing something wrong but I don't think so.

I think the technical term is 'ruined'. Cameras are not built to withstand such abuse. Repair is unlikely to be cost-effective, so replacement seems the only option, taking the cost out of the kids' pocket money. What type and size memory card are you trying to use? The DMC-LZ2 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. It will not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

What do you mean by "gets stuck on zoom? Are you getting any type of error message?
