My dvd will not play

Hi,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust and any fine foreign objects the lens can't read any disc. If you have a CD Lens cleaner, play it to the affected area. If this is not available you may manually clean the optical lens. Open the cover and gently clean the eye of the lens by smooth, clean, soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this, just a gentle stroke only.
2.Check the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : Most of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Also, check if your unit is under warranty period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Don't attempt to open the cover(it will void the warranty).

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

Getting "can not play disc"

Have you tried taking off the cover to see if the disc is spinning inside when you get this message? The motor that spins the disc could be shot.

Need to know what cords i need to buy.

Since you didn't mention the TV model you have, we can't know which in-outputs you have available. If you don't have manuals for them, take good pictures of the rear of both the DVD player and the TV and take the camera (or printouts) to any electronics outlet and show them what you have.
Just about anyone familiar with these pieces will be able to hand you the needed cables.

What is a good burn program for this DVD player?

The Mac and software is not the problem. The Sony DVD player is the culprit. Sony has some proprietary bullsh.t lock hardwired into their system to not play burned discs.

Go on e-bay and look for region free DVD players, which will play any disc like a champ. Sony is a good brand, but they are picky about playing certain discs. Re-gift this thing to someone during Christmas or sell it.

My sony DVP-NS725P will not play discs

Run a DVD disc cleaner through it and see if that helps. If not then open it up and manually clean the laser pickup lens. Then give it a go. If that didn't help, then open it back up and replace the optical drive.

Dvp ns725p says: cannot play this disc

Is it for all discs or just certain types of discs? Some DVD players simply cannot play some formats unfortunately. Often, the issue is with burned DVD-R or DVD+R discs or CD Video. Sometimes it's simply a matter of a bad burn. Refer to your manual as to the formats compatible with your player.

Trying to connect sony dvd player to hdtv

You will need some cables first. It's really not that difficult once you know what each cable does.

Since you're only connecting from the DVD player to a receiver, this should be simple.

There are 4 solutions depending on what cables you have.

Composite - Yellow, Red, and White ended connectors.
S-Video - Black 4-pin connectors.
Component - Green, Blue, Red and sometimes extra Red, White for audio.
HDMI - heavy cable with a wide/flat connector.

Composite connection - Connect the yellow end to the yellow Video Out of the DVD player and to the DVD Video In on the receiver. Connect the Red audio connector to the Red Audio out of the DVD player, the White connector to the White Audio out of the DVD player, and then connect those to the Red and White Ins for DVD Audio on the Receiver.

S-Video Connection - This is the same as the Composite video connection, but connect the black 4-pin cable into the S-Video out of the DVD player and into the In for DVD on the back of the receiver instead of using the yellow video cable. The S-Video cable is a video only cable and uses the same audio cables (the red and white ended cables) for audio.

Component Connection - On the back of the DVD player, connect the 3 video cables that are Red to Red, Blue to Blue, and Green to Green. These will be labeled Y for Green, Cb/Pb for Blue, and Cr/Pr for Red. Connect these video cables to the inputs of the receiver the same way Y for Green, Cb/Pb for Blue, and Cr/Pr for Red. The audio connection is the same as composite and there should be a place on the DVD player that will tell you what audio is for Component. This is also the same on the back of the receiver.

HDMI Connection - This one is the easiest to connect as your audio and video are in the same cable. Plug in your HDMI cable in the back of the DVD player (there should only be one) and then to the HDMI connection for DVD on the back of the receiver.

Now...once you have your connections made, turn on your DVD player, set your receiver to DVD, and enjoy.

If your receiver does not have video inputs, you will need to run the video lines directly to your TV while the audio lines go to your receiver. This will mean you will need to set the receiver to DVD as well as change the channel of the TV to the input you have the DVD player plugged into.

I hope this helps.
