If the line of which you speak is a horizontal line that looks like the picture collapsed, the problem is a vertical circuit problem. If hitting the set "fixes" it, then it is likely to be a bad solder connection. If you can solder, resolder the pins on the vertical IC. This is a small flat IC with about 11pins attached to a heat sink that may me marked LA7837 or something similar.

Let me know if that fails to resolve the problem.

Seems like you have to put a "1" in front of the code....

Looks like this television goes from $100-$200 on Craigslist. If your only looking for a cheap fix for a few years, I can assume you are in the right ballpark. It certainly wont have the movie style quality picture, but after all, it is better than paying $1,000.00 for an LCD. Remember, these televisions will most likely require the digital converter box come this Feb. if you want to watch regular channels w/o cable.

You might need to go into the menu options and set the input from cable to air or vice a verse. The tv in my kids room is like that if it's set to cable with no input at the cable jack then it only gets one channel even after you try to add channels.

My 36A50 suddenly shuts off losing audio and video. The red light on the on/off switch continues flashing until the set is unplugged.

this problem can occur due to problem in different locations inside the tv.

Unfortunately, the 36A50 is not HDTV-ready. That means you will need a converter box. Here is a link to the model's specs, which includes this information:

I should mention, however, that if it's connected to cable (or certain satellite services), you won't need a converter to watch the TV - you'll receive the digital signal (although you won't have the 1080-pixel HD resolution - the 36A50 only has 850 lines of resolution).

another note, are you using the flash on the back of your cable box or do you have a sensor in front of the DVR box?

Sounds like vertical problems on your circuit board. Unless you have some electronics experience you'd better take it in for repair.

The inside of a tube TV contains high voltages even when off and unplugged.

my friend if you open the tv carefully look to see if the tube itself has light, or if you have high voltage i coulbe many different things.wish luck!!

dear friend i think you have techinical problem if you are not a tech.you need someone with the skills to replace some bad caps on the main board.

To be honest, I don't know in that case - I don't know a tremendous amount about the TVs. Best bet is to go through the TV section of the site and direct the question to one of the TV experts, and they can probably fix you right up.

the problem you are having is a loose solder connection on vertical ic,easy fix only soldering vertical ic.tools you need solder iron and solder. but yes your tv is analog and will require a digital converter.

You have a number of bad capacitors in the vertical circuit. If you can solder, you should be able to repair this yourself. I'll look up your model to get the parts needed.
