My answer is based on the model number here-AV-56WP74 or similar--blue light blinking is shutdown to protect the power supply in the set.A few questions you could answer:before this happened was screen red (too much) or had colors skewed or a little 3d looking?The most common issue on this set if that is convergence and it can easily escalate to where it shuts the set down and blue blinks constant.There is a simple way to confirm or deny that issue--Got someone willing to try that? Set will be unplugged and entire front grill under screen removed to try it(I can tell you how and what to do)If no skill at all--consult a shop--if want I will answer questions or comments you post on this page--(add a comment button)SD TECH-

I will try to explain to you what I would do---

1.) I do not know what level of skill you have but I would unplug the set and remove the back cover and then remove the entire plastic grill on the front of the set(two screws on each side from the back and TWO MORE LITTLE SCREWS ON THE FRONT WHERE THE CONTROL DOOR OPENS.

2.) With the front grill removed there is an inspection plate behind it and I would remove it-----you should see right inside a circuit board with metal heat sinks with fins---this is the convergence board---it has several plugs--As you look from the front one of the plugs on it goes to the power board to the left----I usually disconnect that plug---this takes the Convergence board out of the circuit--then I would turn the set on---If it comes on one or both of the chips on the convergence board is bad.(the convergence will be very bad looking with the board disconnected so if the set comes on just turn it off soon)

3.) If you cannot do this I think you should suspect it is the trouble--happens a lot in these sets---

4.) The convergence board only has about 6 plugs---three are identical and need to be marked if you remove them; once all the plugs are removed there are several plastic tabs at the front of the board that will release it----it lifts up from the front and slips into notches in the back( board is about 4 inches deep and maybe 10 inches wide)

5.) With the board out you will see the two STK-392-110 chips--you also need to look carefully at all the resistors--any that are discolored or white in the middle will need to be replaced--usually just one or two will be bad--understand---the reason the set shut down is it is detecting a short---9 out of 10 times in this set it is a convergence problem.

Convergence issue, if you cannot fix it by convergence adjustment, is un-doubtedly due to malfunctioning STK amplifier ICs. There are two of them that need to be replaced . They are located behind large aluminium heatsinks as shown in the image below.

The ICs can be purchased on ebay by using the IC numbers in your set as search keyword. You will have de-solder the old ones, apply silicon based thermal grease to the replacements and solder them into the board. Note that you have to make sure that they are making good contact with the heatsink when you replace them. You will also need to test and replace any resistors that the ICs may have taken out when they have gone bad. I hope you know how to use a multimeter(or ohm-meter) and can read resistor color codes.

The power supply has an automatic shutdown circuit that senses a shorted component and excessive current flow.

If you can access the convergence board and remove the plugs one at a time (red, blue or green) for the convergence output, the TV may start up and show a picture with the unplugged color misaligned.

This confirms a short in the convergence output. The convergence IC failure can show up as coloured outlines or power supply shutdown.

If this does not help, then there is some other short circuit in power or deflection circuits. You need a technician to troubleshoot HV or power problems.

Replacing the output amplifiers (located within the Convergence IC's) allows the pictures to line up correctly, and no more color outlines or power shutdown.

This is the most common fault in all makes of rear projection TVs.

Some models of TV require major disassembly and considerable shop/manufacturer's support to repair because of their design that causes other power supply or vertical deflection problems. The poorly designed products require a "bench" repair that can typically cost from $350 t0 $700.

Some TVs are designed for on-site repair and have more reliable circuit design that does not usually cause damage to other parts of the TV when convergence chips fail. The ones that usually allow reliable on-site repair are JVC, Samsung and Hitachi.

It is normal to have some resistors in the circuit burn up or increase in value from the heat (from 2.2 ohms to 5 or 10 ohms). These resistors must be replaced with the right value or the chip may fail again.

This is not a simple repair like changing batteries or a fuse. Reading through the other posts shows many that try and end up with bigger problems.

Your JVC uses STK 392-110 IC's. Misinformed people replace the IC's with other "new and improved" IC's, like STK 392-150. These are devices with different characteristics and require different value resistors in the circuit. Replacing with the STK 392-150 will cause overheating of the resistors and a damaged IC.

This is whats called a convergence failure. You will need to call in a repair shop or goto sites like www.TvRepairKits.com hthat ave the parts to fix this yourself. Its a common failure on projection TV sets.

Around $300 for a good condition one.

You can get it repaired. Its maybe a resistor/s thats losing its value and needs to be replaced.
You can locate this on the mother board close to the or near to the Fly-back transformer section.

How handy are you if I tell you to disconnect the convergence board to see if it is your problem?

The blinking blue light means the set is in protective shutdown, and I know a fairly easy way to see if it is your problem and how to fix the set if it is.

The most likliest cause is a failed convergence board. Try unplugging the convergence boards wires and then try to power up the set. If it powers up then you know its convergence related. If it doesnt power up its probably a deflection board issue then.

If the red line looks like a swoosh of red across the screen it may be the convergence Ic having an issue.

Go to http://www.encompass.com and log in as a guest. Put your model number in the search engine. Locate the three parts to the screen which you will need and order them. See attached photos of board in your set---this model uses two of the STK-392-110 chips (Black part with that number on it in photos) and total parts cost on EBAY would be under 20 dollars.

This set is fairly easy to do it yourself---I can tell you how to get the parts, how to get the board out and how to do the repair yourself.

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.
