42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture
Our LG 50" plasma tv screen went black after a popping noise but still had sound, after great diliberations decided to take the back off and have a peek!
We unplugged the tv and tested the fuses (there were three we could see) one had blown, the one on the left as you look at the back of the tv it also has one above it. We wrote the code/seriel number down and took the fuse to the electrical wholesalers Maplin and bought a pack of 10 fuses for £1.29 replaced the fuse in the tv and everything now fine!!!!!!
Hope this might be of use to anyone whose lost the picture after a loud popping/snacking noise but still has sound.

Before diving into the TV, make a simple check.
Take a flash light and shine close up onto the TV while it is running, if you can see picture then that tells you the inverter board is bad. If your backlight comes on and you can't see any picture then your video board has failed. If neither your backlight or video work then your power supply isn't feeding the proper voltages to those boards.
Since you have sound it most likely isn't the power supply, although stranger things have happened. Check the power supply last in this case.
From these checks you can isolate your problem and then dive into the TV.

I believe that you are experiencing an intermittent problem with what's called your florescent lamp ballast. The best thing is that it can be repaired/fix. There should be a LG repair shop in your area. Cheaper to bring it in than have a service tech come to your residence.
Should be between $200 to $300 for a repair.

Screen goes black
If the screen goes black while you still hear the sound playing, then it is time to send in the technician for repairing.

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit stage inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. Viewing it in "
Mosaic" or "

Hi,
This is a common problem on these sets. As the menu is fine, this is highly suggestive of an internal failure.you have a driver board failing if you would open the set and on the
left side is the Y-sustain board there are two boards connected to the Y
SUS board. The one on the top drives the top half of the picture and
the one on the bottom drives the lower half of the picture open the
ribbon cables make sure to clean it or Re solder if you see needed turn
set on and test, sometimes cleaning this will fix problem sometimes re
soldering will fix problem and last resort is, the board itself is bad.Unfortunately, you need to diagnose and inspect all the components before replacing any part.If you wish to repair it yourself, i could give you a link to buy the service manual and would upload a troubleshooting chart ( generic ) that would explain how you need to diagnose the fault when you open the TV.However, there is no quick fix. It has to be opened and tested and then diagnosed.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

If you have sound, it is usually a bad Ysustain board, check for an open fuse on the big board on the left. If bad Zsustain board (right side) you usually can see a very faint picture
