Init unable AF

AF means that the CIS scanner is (can) not (get)in right position. This could be because of a broken scanner flat cable, or a loose flatcable or a defective pcb. Check flatcable connection at the pcb (Open scanner like changing carts, open flatcable cover with a screwdriver. Does the flatcable stick in the pcb? (There is only the flatcable without a connector ;-)) Reconnect and power up mfc again. If it doesn't help please write again here.

Brother MFC 5840CNZ displays Ink Empty on CYAN when new cartridge is installed

Something that has worked for some Brother owners to get cartridges recognised.

1. With your MFC powered up, open it up and remove the cartridge you are having a problem with, then close the MFC, leaving it powered up. It should report that there is no cartridge in the machine.

Still with the MFC powered up, open it up and reinsert the ink cartridge, then close the MFC. It should either ask if you have replaced a cartridge or go into its cleaning mode.

Answer "yes" to "have you replaced cartridge?" and it should either "print" or "clean" and then "print".

Printer not activated error code-41

Hi there

Error 41 means there is a major problem with the printhead, usually
requires a print head replacement.

My advice is to take it to a
Brother service centre while if it is under warranty.

If it's out of warranty they are usually a throw away job, the heads cost as much as the printer.

Sorry I know what it feels like, just have a go and see what you can do, clean the heads and so on.

I have a brother 5840cn all in one printer, it

If you look at the Brother you will find a trouble shooting guide for your machine.

In the guide, for the error you quote Brothers guidance is to check for a stuck piece paper, however it also states that if the print head is hard over to one side (righthand side if memory serves me correct), then to contact Brother. If you do so, Brother will tell you it needs to be serviced by a Brother agent, which will likely cost you more than a new one !

If it isnt a stuck peice of paper, the problem is due to the fact that Brother machines excessively self-clean. Each time they self-clean a small amount of ink is dumped in to a holding tank/sponge. When a predefined number of self-clean operations have been performed, the machine refuses to print and gives the error message you have stated. Brother state that the tank/sponge must be replaced before the counter is reset.

However, there is a way of reseting the self-clean counter yourself - if you Google your model number and the error code soemwhere in the results you'll find how to do it. The only risk of doing this without changing the tank/sponge is that it will eventually overflow and leak out the bottom, but I did my Brother all in one some time ago and have had no problems yet.

Unable to initialized

"Unable to Init" indicates a mechanical error, unless you're able to find a stuck paper or parts of a stuck paper or similar, you'll have to send the unit to service to have it fixed.

Unable to continue cleaning message for Brother 5840CN

You will have to remove the scanner top to get to the absorber box, a little more complicated that I care to explain in this forum. You could just reset the absorber box count and move on...the ones I have cleaned were not that bad when this problem and error 46 occurred. Go in to maintenance mode by pressing Menu, *,2,8,6,4 withing two seconds. If the lights are not blinking, press the stop key and retry procedure. The display will not say maintenance if you have error code 46. Once in maintenance mode press 8,0 to enter equipment data log. Press the black start key until the machine displays "Purge". Press 2,7,8,3 in this order to reset purge counter to 0. Press black start key until the display says "Flushing". Press 2,7,8,3 in this order to reset flushing counter to 0. Press stop key to exit the Equipment Data Log. Press 9,9 to exit maintenance mode

Fax is always busy when sending

Has it always done this, or did Fax once work? Sadly, Windows XP Fax has many shortcomings, not the least of which is that it won't work with many modems still in common use. Modem incompatibility is not apparent during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error." There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

Hope helps.

5849cn error 4f

Hi there
Brother 4F

Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.

This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

All I ask is please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

I can't Scan 8 1/2 by 14

I also had problems scanning legal size documents with a Brother MFC-7440N. The documents would scan but would not come out complete. A large portion of the text would always be left out and only an image of the size of regular page size would come out. I knew it had to be something with the settings, so after experimenting with my MFC-7440N I came to the conclusion that I was not going to find the solution on the actual machine. I had a "Hunch" that I would find my solution by connecting the printer to my laptop computer and use the software that came with it. After a couple of minutes I was able to scan Legal Size documents in a breeze... I should of done this months ago. All scanned docs came out in full size. So I took some screen shots to post them up here to let everyone know how to scan legal size documents since I noticed that people are having trouble just like I did. With this instructions you will also be able to scan any available size documents with a Brother MFC-7440N. I will also guide you step by step. After step 4 the remainder steps are OPTIONAL unless you need to change the color or picture file types. Okay, here we go! Step 1. Make sure your MFC-7440N is connected to your computer and the computer has the software installed that came with the printer. Place the Legal Sized documents/papers that you want to scan on the Paper Feeder Scanner located on the most upper area of the machine. Step 2. On your computer, go to START then to DEVICES and PRINTERS, or CONTROL PANEL then DEVICES and PRINTERS. Locate the icon of your MFC-7440N. If its not your DEFAULT printer make it the default one. Then RIGHT Click on the icon. A menu will pop open. Locate START SCAN and click it. Step 3. A small window will open that will give you various options to scan a multitude of sizes and different settings. Locate where it says SOURCE. The default setting might be FLATBED meaning the flatbed scanner of your machine. Click the drop down menu and select FEEDER. By selecting the feeder option your computer will tell your machine to use the automatic paper scanner located on the most upper area of your machine. Step 4. Locate PAPER SIZE. Click on the drop down menu and then select Legal 8.5 x 14 inches (216 x 356mm). If your documents are already located in the feeder you can now go ahead and click SCAN and your documents will begin to scan. Your scanned documents will be saved in a file folder in your computer and that file will pop open for your convenience once all documents are scanned. If you need to change COLOR or Black and White setting plus Picture File Types such as Jpeg or Tiff just click on their respective drop down menu before clicking SCAN.Here are some pictures to help me illustrate it. I hope you find this helpful. Thank You! Will not print shows power

Let me guess: your mfc is about 2.5 years old.
Had a lot of mfc which wont power on because of a bad capacitor.
Thanks to saving policies of brother! Cheap materials which wont last more than 3 years.
This cant be fixed. What you can try is to buy a 2nd hand mfc 5440cn or a 5840cn with a bad printhead and change the main pcb.
