Yes, this is normal. The lid is not airtight and helps to let steam escape.

If you remove the base (3 star screws), you will see that the live cable has a bulge in the cable wrapped in black heatshrink. In the bulge is an in line glass fuse (8a). which you will need to replace or bypass (not recommended).
