It sure sounds like you have a short somewhere, and BTW, good info. Not many people give much info, and without that you are shooting in the dark. The fact that several of your gauges don't work is very telling. Have you had like a hitch or new aux. fuel tank put on recently? Sometimes people don't watch when they install such items and they pinch wires and the problem doesn't show up for a while. As the insulation on the pinched wires sometimes take a while to wear through. Also I hope you are just taking off the negative(black) battery connections. You should always hook the positive first, then the negative. And with the key off you should not get any arcing/crackling sound from the connection when you hook it back up. If you do(which I'll bet you do) it means there is some circuit that is shorted or a relay is closed when it's not supposed to be. It's all about finding out what is hard wired(that means it's not wired through the key switch, it has the potential to be on all the time, but won't draw any current if the insulation in the wiring is ok, and the truck is off). Electrical probs are the worst. good luck.

Sounds like sticking contacts on starter motor will need to b removed and checked ,repair or replace starter motor the carbon brushes usually were down and don't make complete contact, just to make sure check and tighten batt terminals and connections on starter motor and earth wire on chassis

you don't say how long it takes to run down it sounds like you have something that still switched on does it loose power after you have driven somewhere or just overnight

you have a short somewhere in the vehicle try turning everything off and ignition fully off disconnect battery and then as you reconnect see what sort of spark you get if it's quite large there is still something drawing power put a meter between the terminal and cable to see what power its drawing if it's low try turning things on one at a time untill you get a surge that will point you in the right direction to the item thats drawing most power

suspect a defective clutch master cylinder, throwout bearing/slave cylinder or both... check the fluid would be the first sign of problems. fluid is low it's either leaking out or it's time for a clutch job
