Is your battery a LiPo (Lithium?) If so ... These special batteries are charged by a computer circuit that holds the charge amperage constant and adjust upward the charging voltage until the required battery voltage is reached. At this time the charger hold a constant voltage and decreases the amperage as the battery capacity is "topped off". the charger circuit charges the entire battery at once but monitors each cell (cells are about 3.7 volts each) and controls the charge so that all the cells are ballanced. When one of the cells that makes up the battery starts to go bad, the ballance circuitry prevents over charging the others, so one weak cell hold all the cells back from full charge and better charger circuits will signal you with an led or such that the battery is' going' bad.

Offhand, if you would consider and try:

• exercise the spindle motor by manually turning the circular bed where the disc sits on;
• exercise the movement of the laser lens carriage by sliding it back and forth.

If you have the model number of the Radio Shack universal remote, that would help tremendously. There are several that were made. If it's the model 15-302, here are the codes to try. No Magnasonic DVD players are listed. If your Magnasonic DVD/VCR was built more than 6 months before the remote was programmed, then the remote has the best chance of having the correct code. The copyright date for the manual appears to be 1999. I hope this helps. You may want to try searching through all of the codes. Codes would be for what .you are trying to connect to, not the remote itself

Check for fuses first, Some fuses are soldered to the board and not easily identified unless you read the printing on the board. Over volting can cause filter caps to open as well as the power transformer winding's. Some transformers have fuses buried inside, Test the windings with an ohm meter. No reading would indicate an open internal fuse. Doing surgery on that type of transformer can restore it by taking the fuse out and joining the wires.
