The TI82 is a bit old Technology and if you did not use for a few years the screen is dead its a common problem with this model and the TI83

There's a cube root function in the MATH menu. Press the MATH key and it should be item 4.

5/3 cannot be represented exactly. Break it up into two parts, (-8)^5 then take the cube root. Be aware that their are three roots.

The calculator has three display formats for results: Normal, Scientific, and Engineering. It is possible that your calculator is configured to display results in Scientific Format.
