Speedometer on 1997 Yamaha Majesty not working,

Speedometer on 1997 Yamaha Majesty YP250 not working, oil light blinking steadily, not doing it last night.

(product below is incorrect as mine is not listed.)

Problem Solved. Upper end of speedo cable came out of socket. Fixed in half an hour and first 20 minutes were spent exploring to find the problem.

Ken Budd's answer is incorrect: There is only a potential engine problem when the oil light comes on permanently.

The speedo/mileometer on thge Majesty normally sends pulses to a counter that switches on the oil-change warning light at 3,000 km. If the speedo/mileometer ceases to function the oil-change warning light blinks steadily simply to let you know the pulses aren't getting sent to the counter.
The most likely problem is a broken speedo cable; a new one costs £5.72 from AJSutton and you can easily fit it yourself: Take off the windscreen then reach through the gap above the headlamp to unscrew the outer cable beneath the speedo.

I've got the same problem as you right at the moment with my 1996 Majesty but in my case its the gear unit on the front axle (to which the speedo cable connects) that has stopped working: I'm currently on the look out for a new gear unit. Does anybody have one ?

How does the warning light know that the scooter is running (on the move) or not? Why doesn't it signal, when you start the engine and stay still? What is the other information for the counter, that the scooter is on the way, and not on the stand?

  • Anonymous Sep 08, 2011

The front wheel needs to be turning (to turn the speedo cable) - this is the only way the warning light will never know when the scooter has done 3,000 km.

By the way, I've sold my Majesty and got a 650 Burgman. Now that's a serious scooter !

I see... but if the speedo cable fails, how does the ligh know, that the scooter is evetually MOVING - but not sending the signal? There must be another information about the motion, eg. higher rpm, rotation of the backwheel... otherwise the light would start blinking when you stop at red light or you just simpy run the engine in neutral.

I am not aware of any other means of causing the red light to blink. However, I am not a scooter mechanic. If you want to know more about this I suggest you find a friendly Yamaha dealer who might be able to answer the question simply and quickly.

Good answer Monsier
My speedo stopped wrrking 2 days ago with the oil light blinking. My gear unit seems to be turning, the inner cable seems to be intact so in to the bike shop it goes. Hopefully it is something minor and not the speedo unit.
I will keep you all updated once I know.

    Well done Gunsling.

My problem as well. I ensured this will not be a problem again as I nipped it up with pliers.

I have a Yamaha majesty yp400 2013 speedo stopped working oil light permanently on any idea with the problem

The speedometer problem is likely caused by a faulty speed sensor (on front wheel). The oil light is likely caused by a bad sensor or a shorted sensor wire (rubbing on the engine).
