I bought the bike in December and for the first week it was great but then issues... It's been to the mechanic 3 times since I bought it. It's had an oil service, petrol tank been cleaned out(not acid washed and recoated, just rinsed) new plugs, complete carburetor service and generally checked to see what the problem is. Everywhere I go, people say it's the carbs but since they were serviced by a mechanic a month ago, I'm not so sure.
I've been told that I should warm the bike up when I start it in the morning so I do - I start it will full choke for about 20 seconds or until I hear the revs pick up and it runs smoothly. then I slowly push the choke so it's only a tiny bit out and let the bike run for a couple of minutes. after that, I push the choke in completely and push it out of the garage. The thing is that after the choke is pushed in, you can hear that it loses power and begins to fade - revs get slower and slower until the engine dies. It does this unless I adjust the idling screw to idle VERY high - like close to 4000rpm(my rev counter starts at 3000)
Whenever I get the bike back from the mechanic he's readjusted the screw to what he says is correct (from the sound, I'd guess 1.5-2k rpm)
I have to keep the throttle open at least a little bit or the engine dies. It rides ok above 20km/h MOSTLY but when i come up to traffic lights, even if the bike is definitely warmed up (after 30km of riding), it sometimes dies at the lights if I don't give it a little gas. Almost always, she starts again as soon as I press the ignition switch
Next, sometimes, I'll be riding(happens at almost any speed, have not looked at revs when it happens) the bike will suddenly ****. sometimes once, sometimes more than once. Sometimes, it will then get going again and be fine, sometimes it feels like I've lost a large chunk of power but she still keeps going and sometimes, she just dies completely and I have to coast to the side of the road and restart. Most often, she starts again right away but a couple of times, i had to try for 5 minutes and once, she wouldn't go at all(I got the mech to pick her up - he kept her at his shop for a week - she runs now but all the other problems are still there)
Lastly, sometimes(so far 4 times), I'll be riding (between 40 and 120km/h) and suddenly, she'll lose a lot of power and then backfire and all power is restored and she rides fine.
I hope I've provided enough info for a reasonable diagnosis. I look forward to responses and thank you in advance for your help.
I Had that problem with my 1988 Slingshot, was down to a kink in the fuel line between the fuel tank and carbs. Try it in reserve option on fuel tap, also balance the carbs if not already done so. Also the accelerator cable might need to be greased. Jerry.
Though shes had a carby service I m still looking in that vacinity ie the inlet manifolds are they sucking air through cracks caused by perishing you can check this by spraying wd 40 onto the manifolds while the motor is running if the engine speed increases you noyou found the fault unfortunately due to the age of your machine it wont be easy to find replacements you will just have to ring around till you get lucky all the best
Sounds like ignition problems; I know you've had it serviced but check condition of spark plugs. Check all electrical contacts for corrosion, more specifically the timing pickup circuit, wires to coils, CDI connector. You're CDI may be the culprit, try swapping it out for a known good one. If it's back firing then enough fuel is getting through the carbs, so would indicate to me that the problem doesn't lie there. Hope you have some luck.

Thanks Delage guy,
I haven't tried any of those but will check that stuff today and this weekend
Have you replaced the air cleaner? These bikes are very sensitive to old or dirty aircleaners. I would also check that the fuel switch (valve) is working properly. Check that the vacuum pipe is not perished , leaking or improperly fitted . Make sure the diaphram does not have any pinholes and is sealing correctly. When you remove the switch from the tank you will see the filters, ensure that they are letting the fuel flow freely. Check for perished or cracked rubber parts on the inlet manifolds, if necessary clean and seal with urethane ( windscreen glue).
