The battery voltage before running the engine should be about 12 volts. Use a voltmeter, and check the voltage at the battery. After the engine is started, the voltage should go to about 14 volts.

This can be caused by a multitude of things. Firstly you will need a manual. I do not seem to have a freebie available but you can have a look, maybe one of them will do the job. http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp .
I would start with making sure the air- cleaners were functioning correctly, if in doubt, change them. Your problem sounds more like a choking one. Cleaning the carbs could be a good idea anyway, but you have to know what you are doing, and it is always good to put a new gasket kit in when re-assembling.
Check to make sure the alternator cable is attached.
