I had the same problem 2001 XVS1100 Custom
this is a starter issue Over time the starter on this bike twists when its under a load.
Look at the two bolts holding the starter on if they are not straight across then its twisted. turn starter back in line with a pair of big channel locks and try to start this should do the trick if this works i would recommend taking the two bolts out and bend them back straight or replace and reinstall starter this should fixya problem
Hope this helps ...............Jimmyfixya

The starter button is used in an open circuit design.
You must press the starter button to "Close" this circuit before the starter will engage. Taking the starter button out of the loop helps support the suspect short. Assuming you kept the starter button wires from touching. :) If not, it is most likely the starter button.
Trace the wires coming from the starter button.
There could be a short circuit. (Same as pushing the starter button). Check along the handle bars and anywhere rubbing could cause a break in the insulation. Try this at night with the lights off.
You may be able to SEE the spark and locate it quickly.
Good luck!
SOURCE: Starter is just spinning and not engaging
Assuming that no gears are broken in your flywheel, which is not likelly, I would say that you either have a bad solenoid, or not enough current going to the solenoid.
Make sure your battery terminals are clean and making good contact. Make sure the cables on your starter are tight and clean. If the solenoid is bad, or not getting enough current, it will not have the strength enough to push the Bendix out so that it engages.
SOURCE: Where does the oil come out of a 2004 Yamaha 1100 VStar Classic
Oil drain plug is located near the bottom of the engine, left side toward the front. The oil filter element is located on the right side of the engine under the cover toward the front. Changing the oil filter usually requires removal of the front exhaust pipe. There is an aftermarket filter relocation kit that replaces the filter element with a spin on filter that mounts on the front of the bike.

The one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear.
