I've checked the connector on the regulator, which seems fine. I've disconnected the front lights & tried to test the voltage coming through, but can't seem to find anything. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Darren
Most likely cause is a broken or bad earth on the dim light (power then has to go through 3 filaments in series to get to the earth on the good light).
Thanks for that.
Where will I find the common earth?
It is one of the 3 wires connected to the headlights. Measure voltages on each of the 3 wires at both high and low beam. The wire that never goes to +12v should be the earth (0 volts, connected to negative side of battery). Looks like it's black on the wiring diagram.
Sometimes the earth connection fails at the bulb, check for good clean connection at bulb and try swapping the bulbs over. Very likely to be something near there.
All sorted now. Thanks

SOURCE: low beam headlights do not work, but high beam headlights do
Clyde,
I've been troubleshooting this same problem on a different vehicle this week, and I can give you the steps I'd take.
1. If both sides went out at the same time, the problem is *NOT* likely to be the bulbs.
2. Check the fuses to see if both low beam lights are on the same fuse. Many cars have one fuse for low beam and another for high beam, so both lights out at the same time typically means fuse blown.
3. If the headlights are OK and the fuses are OK, then the problem is *LIKELY* the headlight switch. In my case, AutoZone has one and it can be installed easily; but in your case, that may not be as simple.
Please post your findings or comments.

we had the same problem there is a small line that connects itno the alternator, it kept jiggling loose. we found a way to tighten it and the problem went away

add some driving lights or re aim your high beams lower so you can use them all the time.

had the same problem on my 92....check under the hood on the drivers side, towards the front, there is a "junction box" with all of the lighting wires connecting from the switches to the lights. My wires were all corroded inside,so I cleaned the ends and bought a new box from the local electronic supply store. The problem has not come back.
Cheers

The driver side headlight is dim. This is caused by loose
ground contact of the headlight ground terminal. Have
a check on this by tightening it up or reconnecting to
good ground (chassis).
