I take it you can get it to start with a little throttle applied. Most motorcycles do not have a true choke, but rather than that enrich the fuel/air mix to get the same results. I think you're on the right track, but if you haven't overhauled a carb on a bike before you should pay a motorcycle mechanic to fix this.

You need to disassemble the carb. and spray with carb. cleaner. If you need tips on how to do this, just let me know. You may need a new carb. kit as well, but we won't know that until you first perform the first step, or if the carb. parts are more than 3 years old. If they are, then go ahead and buy the carb. kit and replace the parts.

You will most likely find that your Air Cleaner element is blocked & possibly may have sucked up some leaves reducing air flow.

SOURCE: 2002 Yamaha Vstar 1100 Custom. STARTER Problem
The starter button is used in an open circuit design.
You must press the starter button to "Close" this circuit before the starter will engage. Taking the starter button out of the loop helps support the suspect short. Assuming you kept the starter button wires from touching. :) If not, it is most likely the starter button.
Trace the wires coming from the starter button.
There could be a short circuit. (Same as pushing the starter button). Check along the handle bars and anywhere rubbing could cause a break in the insulation. Try this at night with the lights off.
You may be able to SEE the spark and locate it quickly.
Good luck!

Thanks Steve...while I have never had to dig into a carb, I'm basically forced to learn on the fly. I haven't any money for a certified mechanic and I dont think it would run long enough for me to get it somewhere... when I pulled the plugs the front cylinder plug was that sooty black and wet with an odor, not gas so gonna assume oil, and the rear cylinder plug looks perfect. Where do I start that trouble shooting at?
The wet fouling of the spark plug is a sign there is no spark in that cylinder. Take a fresh plug and put the boot from that side of the coil/spark plug wire on it and then lay the plug on the cylinder and run the starter to see if there is a spark. You may be looking at a bad wire, or coil, or some other ignition related problem. This would give you the symptom of barely being able to start because basically half the engine is dead and just pumping fuel/air into the exhaust on that side. The old plug is basically a goner, so toss it. Try using a fresh plug and starting it. It could be that the plug fouled and then could then the engine couldn’t fire because of that. Those are the possibilities. Two things you can do are: 1. spray some carb cleaner (sparingly) into the throat of the carb from the air filter side, and then work the throttle and choke a few times. Try to wipe the residue off and then button her back up and give the starter a shot. The second thing is use some dry lubricant like graphite on the carb linkage and work it back and forth to make sure the choke is free and works easily. Give the starter a try and see what happens.
I think you were only getting one cylinder to fire which was why you had to apply throttle to keep it running. If there is no spark in the cylinder coming from the coil, that’s the problem and why the spark plug was wet fouled. If the exhaust was not a smoke screen the likelihood that bad rings or a valve is causing oil collect in the cylinder is pretty slim. Good luck and I hope it is a minor repair.
