Hi John:
Greg Mahin will probably be able to help you.
I'd be suspicious that there may be an electrical problem with the fuel pump, but that's only because you said there is one. All my Harleys were gravity fed carbs.
Would it be possible to check the fuel pump for a bad ground?
Cheers.

Motorcycle died on the road and then fuel injection system not working at initial start-up

Bike died on road, I assume you got it to start and now the fuel isn't pumping? Check the fuse for the pump first thing. Under left side cover.

Ran out of gas... is there anything special needed in order to prime the fuel pump and get the bike started

No! Several cycles of the ignition switch to operate the fuel pump may be required while attempting to start the vehicle. A very small spray of some starting fluid into the air cleaner might be helpful as well.
