1986 kawasaki voyager 1200 hard starting

what year, ??????????? 1986? to 2003,. called XII (mark 12)
on reserve or not;.?
petcock filter /screens dirty. or gunk/trash in bottom of tank.rust?
it is staving for fuel , find that and is cured. (simple but reality is a beast)
why post to cars?, and not motorcycles. only.
dirty carbs will not like weak gravity fed tank pressure (natural)
dirty float needles/?
I bet all the above, that told
or just bad fuel.(age old)

no, the cat has nothing to do with idle, even if it failed it will only give problems if it fell apart and clogged the system and in that case you wouldnt have any top end power.
As far as why its running rough or getting hot fast someone will need to look at *** to make sure you didnt mess up but the hot issue shouldnt have anything to do with maybe having the timing off.

I had a similar problem. Mine would continue running, but it felt like it dropped cylinders. Sputtered, backfires...etc. Check your ignitor box (under the seat, attached to the rear fender. Start the bike up to operating temp, and if it does the problem, the tech that fixed mine squeezed the ignitor box, and it returned to normal. Got a new one checking salvage yards online.

I found this on ebay motors it had 11 days owner has 4 copies. hope this helps.

more then likely it is the timing chain going its probably stretched out and needs replaced
