2000 yz250 shift to bottom (neutral) won't drop into 1st

All new tranmission parts.. forks, etc.. first fired it up, and shift all the way down is neutral, won't go down into 1st gear and no click on the lever, or 1/2 click back up or down for neutral. I can click up and hit 2nd, 3rd, 4th, but don't think I hit 5th.. Thanks

Check your shifting drum.may have left a pin out of the shifting drum.

Sounds like a slightly bent shift fork. The slider gear isn't quite engaging into 2nd. If the bend gets worse then you won't get into first and the pedal will get real stiff in those gears. The repair is best done in the shop.

SOURCE: 2006 R6 Shifting Problem

Howdy: The 3rd and 4th gears are used the most, after awhile the dog and shifting forks get worn more. Try changing to Yamaha Lube simi-syn oil 10/40. Drain oil after warm up (get trans oil warm). The oil is in a silver 4gal containe at the Yamaha dealer. This oil has helped me.

The problem is a bent shift fork. The repair is major surgery on the transmission. The entire engine comes apart just to get to the forks. Some special tools are required. The generic diagram below shows how the shift forks work. tombones49_267.gif

The gear won't shift back into neutral on 1998 subaru forester 5 speed manual tranmission
i had the same problem with my toyota estate i had to remove the gearbox and remove the bottom plate then tap the gears with a hammer not to hard untill the gear moved then put it back together and worked fine never did it again and wasnt to hard to move the gear.
hope this helps i tryed rock banging and everything else before i took the gearbox out

I have a 2000 v star classic it shifts fine in 1st ,2nd, and 3rd gear. but when i go to shift into 4th or 5th gear, 4th it goe to like neutral and will not shift up any further???? i am thinking a problem...

I've got a 1996 Kawasaki ZX6R. The bike runs great. However, it will shift down into first gear, but won't shift up past neutral. Any thoughts? Thanks, Lance
The bike has a bent shift fork. The engine must come out then gets flipped upside down to remove the bottom half of the crankcase. This allows access to the gears and shift forks. The repair is not recommended for the home mechanic. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_211.gif

Gear selector honda shadow
Sounds like a bent shift fork or two. Replacing the bad shift forks is major surgery and is NOT recommended for the inexperienced mechanic. Several special tools are needed. The top end and gearbox get totally torn down just to get to the shift forks. This is a very expensive repair, guessing $2100 or so at the dealers. Bummer. Contact a few dealers to cofirm my view of the problem and the probable repair cost. The shift forks move left and right as the shift drum is rotated when you lift or push down on the shift pedal.

When I shift from second gear to first, it just slips to neutral
You have a bent shift fork not engaging the slider gear properly into 1st gear. The engine will need to come out of the bike. Remove the top end, the flywheel and electrics, the clutch, shift mechanism and kick starter and a few other parts. THEN you are ready to split the gearbox to get to the crankshaft, gears and shift forks.

You will need an impact driver, flywheel puller, case splitter, torque wrench and factory service manual, plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it". I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project and they have a knowing eye working on the engine.

What would be a good plan for repairing an old CB360?
  • First thing is to get a factory repair manual. Next is to wash the bike with special attention to the gear box and cylinder. Mud falling from a cylinder and into the crank is not a good thing.
  • Assess the engine as a whole. Does it look like everything is there? Any missing side plates? Make a list of known parts needed; engine parts and body , frame, electrical, wheels, cables etc.. Locate a source or sources for used parts. Go to Google and input “ motorcycle salvage honda “. Start there.
  • Only work on the engine. Replacing a headlight is pretty useless if the engine is trash.
  • Start with the gearbox. Does the kick start turn the crank? Let’s say it does. Put the bike on the center stand and turn the rear wheel. Pull the clutch in and shift into 1st, neutral, 2nd and up to 5th then back down to 1st. If the shift lever locks up, or if it is extremely stiff in changing any of the gears, then you know that shift forks are needed. Chances are that nothing else is going to be wrong with the gearbox other than new crank bearings going in while the gearbox is opened up for shift fork replacement..
  • Now check out the top end. Pistons going up and down? Doesn’t matter. You will want fresh cylinder bores and new pistons and rings for the rebuild.
  • Look at the electrics. Is the wiring harness burned anywhere?
  • You may want to short cycle the rebuild process if the shifter is okay and the crankshaft turns over. Forget the pistons etc., just get the motor to run. The satisfaction will be immense and you can tear down the top end later.

Honda shadow aero 2005 VT750C shifting problem
You have a bent shift fork. This is not a repair job for the amateur. The engine comes out of the frame, turns upside down then the bottom of the gear case gets separated from the top. The entire shift drum, forks and all, gets removed and the bent fork gets replaced. The engine re-assembles in the reverse pattern.

Now what about stressed gears? Any cracked or broken slider gear dogs?

You are going to have at least 75 parts on the work bench. Was the collar on the slider gear on the left side or the right? I am trying to show you why you had best be careful. The shop charges more to fix a box of loose parts than if they fix a gearbox.
