When we turn the gas on at the gas tank, gas leaks out from the hose on the carb. If the motor is idleling the gas continues to slowly leak. If the motor is being ridden it does not leak. The more you are on the gas the less it leaks.
If you turn the gas off at the tank it stops leaking.

turn off fuel valve if still leaks its between valve and the tank should be two lines from tank to valve or tank itself or even valve --if stops then leak from valve to carb ---either way need to remove valve knob and side flaring to access area
New carbs aren't known for leaking unless you had it open and altered some thing. A float can get stuck if you let it sit without using it. Should put stable in your tank and run it so thestable gets into the carbs. Check above the carb for a gas leak from the gas hoses and check the gas tank. They may be running down onto the carb and just appears like the carbs leaking
Carbs have a reservoir in the base that will last for a few miles before it is drained. So turning the fuel off doesn't starve the engine immediately. This is normal.
1. remove the hose from the carb and see if the petcock is shutting off the gas and if not clean, repair or replace the petcock. 2. look in the tank and see if it has rust in the tank even a small haze of rust as rust will cause the needle and seat to stick in the carb and make the gas leak. If the gas tank has a lot of rust it may need a tank rubber liner kit added or even a new tank to stop the leaking. 3. if the bike has been sitting for a while it may have trash in the fuel system(carb/petcock/tank). Rust or any trash can cause a leak. Properly clean out the carb and fuel system and add a new filter when done. 4. Improperly adjusted or bad needle/seat or float in the carb will cause continual leaking. Replace the needle/seat/float and adjust the new one when installed. Check your service manual for float adjustments.
You will need to drain the carbs then remove the float bowls in order to clean the interior of each carb. Use spray carb cleaner and pay special attention to the float pin. Right now some trash is stopping one or more of the float pins from closing fully. This means gas flows into the carb(s) and the carb(s) have no way to stop the gas. The trash could be a bit of old rubber gasket, rust from the tank, a sliver of grass, or "cotton" from dandelions or trees. Those are the usual suspects. Please rate my answer. Thanks.
sounds like u either have a loose hose or a broken hose look for hose going from gas tank to engine check for any breaks or loose connections if you find nothing than check carb for any leaks if broken hose u can replace it for around $2.00 to $10.00 depending on how much hose and clamps u need if it's not the hose then it could be carb-check bottom of carb and sides for any gas leaking out do all this with motor turned off once u find problem-start engine and see if u have any other leaks
Several things could be wrong. First, the fuel petcock (valve) at the bottom of the gas tank should be turned off when the bike is not being ridden. Also, it is possible the valve may not be fully shutting off the gas. This can allow the carb to overflow and leak gas. A stuck open or punctured float in the carb bowl can cause overflow. The float should be light as a feather and have nothing inside it but air. Is the carb securely mounted?
Check for cracked fuel hose or bad connections at the tank and carb. Is the fuel valve body leaking gas where it mounts to the tank? Heck, with the bike being 36 years old the tank may be leaking at a weld or due to rust through. I wish I could work on your bike. The older bikes are more fun to work on than the newer bikes. Post a reply and let me know what you find.
Check the gas hoses (or hose connections) connected from the gas tank to the carb. to see if the hose(s) has holes someplace or lose connections. If all is ok in that area check to see if you carb have vibrated loose allowing gas to escape. You can also check to see if the carb needs to be cleaned and diaphragm replaced if it is no longer soft and pliable. Sometimes the diaphragms in carb turn to paperlike substance when exposed to gas for any length of time and will not close off that area of the carb allowing it to leak gas.l
