SOURCE: 2nd gear does not work on my Yamaha Virago xv250

Sounds like a slightly bent shift fork. The slider gear isn't quite engaging into 2nd. If the bend gets worse then you won't get into first and the pedal will get real stiff in those gears. The repair is best done in the shop.

SOURCE: my banshee wont shift past 2 gear

You have a bent shift fork. The repair means taking the engine out of the frame then removing the top end, removing the flywheel and electrics, removing the clutch , shift mechanism and kick starter and a few other parts. THEN you are ready to split the gearbox to remove the gears and crankshaft and then the shift drum and bent shift fork. Next you get to put it all back together. This is a pretty big job for the home mechanic.

You will need an impact driver, flywheel puller, case splitter and torque wrench plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it".
I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project.

SOURCE: The trans is stuck in 3rd gear. wont shift

sounds like the shift lever shaft broke internally. if you know enough to take it apart and repair yourself, you will firure out how the gearing works. also check shifting forks for defects, make certain thier not bent or this problem will happen again.

SOURCE: Transmission problem in E230 Benz

What you need to check is the transmission release bearing because if there is a clearance on the release bearing you will encounter this problem and also check the transmission oil.

SOURCE: hi, I have a 2001 suzuki gsxr 600 and it sometimes

You need to have your gear box checked, it might be a press or clutch but it needs to be opened to sort out this problem. To start try to see if you can increase the tension of the clutch and if not lucky then you have no other choice but to open the gear box.

2002 ford mustang won't shift into 3rd gear

most 4 speed shifters from 2nd gear to third gear, go up and to the right side. The linkage may be not be lubricated and binding up with 1st and 2nd gear shifter rod.Put car up on jack stands in front, and have some one shift through the gears, and see if shift rod is binding up.It may also be bent. Put in 4th gear, and have some one down shift from 4th gear down to 3rd, and to 2nd.If not bent, keep shifting through all the gears. If rod is bent, replace. I hope the clutch is good. Dont try to bang the gears hard. Hope this helps

I was driving to work this morning and was in 3rd gear, went to down shift at a stop sign and its stuck in 3rd gear. 1988 jeep wrangler. It has been grinding the gear for a few weeks now everytime I change...

The 3rd Gear Synchro is worn or damaged, which is why it grinds when you try to upshift or downshift into 3rd gear. When it goes out completely you will have a very hard time shifting into 3rd gear, since the Synchro lines up the gears to make shifts smooth and easy.

95 SATURN HOW TO TIGHTEN A GEAR SHIFT LINKAGE

I take it that you have a standard transmission ? there is no adjustment, but on the saturns the plastic insert on the shifter lever (remove the center console) is what breaks, Napa auto parts has the replacement part for about $20, or you can go to saturn and spend $200 on replacing both cables

1991 softail will not go into 3rd gear.it will go from 4th to 5th

Without being able to see and mess with the bike a bit, I would guess that you have a shifter pawl spring broken in your transmission. It's either the return spring or the spring on the pawl itself. To test the spring, start from the "neutral postition" of the shifter. Regardless of the gear the bike might be in, when you are not pushing down on the shifter or lifting up on it, it is in the neutral position, where it normall sits. Now, using your fingers push down on the shift lever until you feel the transmission start to shift, you feel a resistance. Stop right there, do not shift the gear but allow the shifter to return to the neutral position. Now, lift the shifter with your fingers until you feel the resistance of the transmission getting ready to shift. What you are feeling for is the resistance of the shifter return spring. Does it feel the same in both directions? If not, the spring is broken. If it does, then the problem is something else.

Still if the transmissio will not shift into a particular gear, something is wrong inside the transmission and you'll have to go into it to find the problem most likely.

Good Luck

At times its hard to shift from 1st to 2nd gear. after i get into 2nd it shifts fine. i dont have this problem all the time . i have a 2005 kingpin

could be one of two things....clutch adjustment( because its not fully engaging the clutch while shifting, and once you get into 3rd you can actually shirt without the clutch if needed, or a bend shift fork.....which can be caused by knocking it into gear or missing gears while shifting

Transmission will not upshift between 3rd and 4th gear

It sounds like the shifter pawl might not be centered. This is located behind the clutch basket and is a pretty big job to get to, easy adjustment just a pain to get to. You will need a manuel to do it yourself.
