Wen running hot the overflow of the radiator runs

the puke line for the radiator runs to the frame between the radiators. it's a bad location for it and very messy in the event of coolant loss.

yes they tend to run hot...
ktm has a great add on electric fan for your bike and it well help greatly. save money by installing it yourself as its easy to install.

also use Engine Ice or Water Wetter for better cooling.

I prefer Evans NPG, cost more but worth it!

Ktm 450 exc Problems I

How is the pull when riding up a hill? It sounds like the compression may be low, if you have a compression tester, test the cylinders. Also, look at the plugs for white spots, fouling or burning. Torque is generated by compression and your just do not have any torque. If it is overheating, you may want to have the head looked at for a crack. Somewhere along the line you are losing compression and the overheating could be directly related to a cracked head. As far as the battery goes, the fan is just drawing more power than the system has. You may wish to try to find a battery that will fit, but has more cranking power and therefore stores more power for the fan. The fan kit is sucking the juice out of the battery, I would look at the connections as well. If the fan is running at all times, you are overheating and this could cause all of these problems to be related, Find your compression issue and you will more than likely find your solution to all of your other issues. I suspect the head is cracked and this is the problem causing all of your problems.

Lets see if this works... I

Thank you for contacting FixYa with your KTM inquiry.
This happens sometimes. Usually it's one of two things:
  • You forgot to turn the gas lever off under the tank (Petcock).
  • The float valve stuck in the open position and allowed gas to drain out of the open petcock.
Bikes bounce around quite a bit sometimes mounted on the trailer on the trip home and if the petcock is open this happens. Sometimes the float valve sticks open. Noting serious just smelly and annoying and gets you in trouble with the wife. Tap on the float bowl with the handle of a screwdriver and it usually will shut off.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,

Crankcase seal is this an easy fix or not?

Hi,

I am sorry for the trouble. This is a common problem on most of the models till 2009. I would not recommend you to do it yourself .

Here's a small trick we use in my shop when removing stubborn seals, if the seal has enough side surface (Area from the crank to the outside edge) we drill a hole in the side of the seal, we have ground down a screw driver in the shape of an ice pick, then you insert the pointed end in the drilled hole, pound it in a little, if it hits the case behind the seal you can use that as leverage to help start getting the old seal out - If it hits nothing you can put a "small" block of wood on the outside edge and use the pointed screw driver like a crow bar - Once you get the lipped part of the seal disturbed you should be able to use a flat drift and pound the outside edge of the seal towards the crankshaft, then once you see daylight between the outside edge and the case you will be able to put a flat screw driver in that area and pop the old seal out.

Though, it could save you $$$$, however would not be an easy time for beginner.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

I have a 2007 KTM 450 exc. Have not riden it much

I would check to make sure you have no air leaks anywhere, as in, something isn't tightened down correctly and that the air filter is in good shape. It sounds like you are running lean (too much air) Also you may want to check to make sure your hot start isn't stuck (in or out). Did you replace the gas with fresh gas? Make sure you have some seafoam or other fuel stabilizer in there to help. Start there and let us know what happens.

Tied bike down in ute

It's possible you may have leaked some oil, but first things first, clean the heck out of them and ride it around again to see if you are STILL leaking oil. If you have to top them up, there's a few methods out there, one guy I knew used a meter stick to measure the oil in the forks, but if you are going to be in there, you might as well drain the oil and start over with the correct amount of fluid. I hope this helps a little. Good luck.

I just bought a 2009 ktm 450exc new from dealer

Take the bike back to the dealer. The problem with KTM bikes is that they are so highly engineered that most riders, ( and most dealers ), have a problem getting them tuned properly. Since the bike is new, the carb should not be the problem. Don't mess with it. Have the dealer check the radiator for proper coolent level and coolent flow. If the bike has a fan, check the sensor and fan operation.

Can I get a “very helpful” rating on this answer?

Checking my valve clearances I found my rhs inlet

It will not get tighter ,try shimming . Valve clearance is allowing for heat exspansion .a extra large clearance is noisy and will not allow the valve to operate properly .too tight a clearance will not shut off the valves and cause exspansion loss in the commpresson stroke .And in some cases the piston may hit the valve.Resulting in a loss of power.A loose or large valve clearance is noisy and will give your enging a sluggish performance.
