Hi, Anonymous to perform a proper compression test you need a pressure gauge either threaded or push in. You will get a higher more accurate reading when the engine is at normal operating temperature along with burnt fingers if you are not protected or careful, cold testing works just fine and it's the method I use 99% of the time. If your bike has cams and valves you need to make sure your valve clearance is within book specs. Always blow forced air around the spark plug before you remove it to eliminate any uninvited contamination from getting inside the cylinder. Install the compression gauge, twist the throttle grip to the wide open position and kick or hit the starter button long enough for the engine to turn over 5-6 times. Record the reading and repeat the process 3 times to get the average reading. Single cylinder engines must have a minimum of 100 PSI anything less call a Priest for Last Rites, it's time for a top end overhaul. Multi-cylinder engines must have no more than a 10% difference between each cylinder, for you high- performance ******* no more than 10 lbs. per cylinder. To run on today's fuel most bikes have pistons with compression ratio's designed to give acceptable performance using an 87 octane graded fuel, this means the average compression readings on most bikes will be 125-150 PSI. I have gotten readings of 200+ on some big inch V-Twins and Thumpers but these numbers are rare and require high octane fuel to eliminate cylinder ringing or pinging.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a cursory reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking check for spark leakage in the dark
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
8. Faulty CKP or CMP, MAP, ETS, ATS, TPS, O2 sensor.
9. Dirty air filter.
10. Intake air leak.
11. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system.
12. Carburetor contaminated, sticky float, plugged jets.
13. Carburetor has oil in the bowl due to excessive oil in pre-mix.
14. Carburetor vacuum diaphragm torn, cracked, not seated or installed improperly.
15. Multiple carburetors out of sync.
16. Fuel filter clogged.
17. Old or contaminated fuel.
18. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carb vent line closed off.
19. Gas cap diaphragm valve faulty.
20. Vacuum line from intake manifold to fuel valve is broken, cracked, pinched, or missing.
21. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
22. Incorrect valve timing.
23. Valve springs floating, weak, or broken.
24. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.
25. Incompatible performance parts.
26. The control module may be in "LIMP" mode
27. Check for engine trouble codes.

Hi, Marc and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, stator, magneto, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Faulty neutral, side stand or clutch lever safety switch.
10. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
11. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
12. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
13. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
14. Fuel tank empty.
15. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
16. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
17. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
18. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.
19. Lean angle switch is faulty or needs adjustment.

Hi, Melisa it looks like you have a faulty voltage regulator or a dead short in the system in order to check out any circuits in the Charging System you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, your battery may show 12.5 volts or more during an initial cursory test but in reality has little or zero amps and must be replaced. AGM batteries are prime for this type of deception. All voltage readings will be on the DC scale except for Stator Output which will be AC you will need a multi meter to conduct the following tests.
"WARNING" never plug or unplug any electrical connector in the charging system with the engine running !!!
1. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9.6 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Make sure your voltage regulator is properly grounded with a clean tight connection, then check voltage at the battery with the bike running between 2000-3600 RPM, depending on your system specs, your readings should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers or the reading is 15 volts or higher replace the voltage regulator.
4. Faulty regulator diodes can allow excessive amounts of voltage going back to the battery causing it to overheat, boil its contents and swell the casing. The excessive voltage will also spike the charging system allowing light bulbs to surge brighter than normal until they fail along with the main circuit breaker.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the multimeter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you may have a faulty alternator rotor.
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to a ground, the multimeter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator multi meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers, you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, which is the # 1 offender.

Hi, Dwayne, I have run into this situation many times and it's usually caused by incorrect engine and transmission alignment and or loose bolts. If most of the lip is still intact then you can silicone a new o-ring into the inner primary let it dry for 24 hours then apply another layer of silicone on the exposed side of the o-ring and install the inner primary with bolts finger tight or you can grind off the remaining lip and install a special gasket kit for this situation. Starting in the middle and working outwards in a criss-cross or circular pattern torque inner primary bolts to 7 ft. lbs. grab the main shaft of the transmission and turn it to make sure it spins free, repeat the process with the torque wrench set at 14 ft. lbs. and spin the main shaft repeat the procedure a 3rd and final time with the wrench set at 20 ft. lbs. then spin the main shaft.

Hi, Rick sorry this took so long to answer there was a storm yesterday and my building lost power, to check the oil level in the primary the bike must be level, remove the Derby Cover exposing the clutch pack, oil level line should be at the bottom of the large diaphragm spring or 2.75" straight down from the center of the adjusting screw. The total amount of Primary Chaincase Lubricant is 30-36 oz. Hi Richie, on a Softail remove seat and directly behind the battery is a black plastic box. The cover slides up and off revealing the starter relay and the system/fuel pump relay for you injected folks and the various assorted circuit fuses. Good luck
