Kawasaki 2001 zr7s. can i replace just the friction rings or should i replace all the rings?
In general It's always a good idea to do a complete clutch assembly all at once, especially if there is more than one clutch plate/ring. Before you start stripping the clutch down check the simple silly stuff first. Check all the linkages from the lever to the actual clutch. The issue could just be the cable or a linkage sticking. Check the cable sleeve is routed correctly as a tight turn in it can also cause it to bind.
If you can release the cable or get some slack on the cable, operate the clutch lever at the gearbox end with your hand. If it's stuck it's a clutch issue if it moves it's a cable or linkage issue.
How many miles are on the bike? Higher mileage? Do the whole clutch. If it's a Very Low mileage you will probably get away with just the friction plates.
*Note* If the bike has been ridden HARD this can also wear a clutch out faster.
If you've got the clutch stripped down take a Very good look at ALL the rings and plates on both sides and if there is any wear or damage change the whole thing.
