That is a difficult one to diagnose. Coils either work, or they don't work, so I reckon unlikely to be a coil. The most likely reason is a chaffed wire shorting to ground, a work hardened wire inside insulation losing contact, or a bad / loose connection in a connection plug. The problem in Harleys is vibration.
You can break connectors, check them for grip and continuity and spray them with electrical switch cleaner. Finding breaks in wire is no so easy, you have to use a test meter and jiggle them.

If the security system on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle is not responding to the key fob, there could be a few potential causes for this issue:
Weak Battery: Check the battery in your key fob. If the battery is weak or depleted, it may not transmit a strong enough signal to communicate with the security system. Replace the battery with a fresh one and try again.
Fob Synchronization: In some cases, the key fob may become unsynchronized with the security system. To resynchronize the fob, you can try the following steps:
Turn the ignition switch to the ACC or IGN position.
Press and hold the security system disarm button on the left handlebar control until the turn signals flash three times.
Release the disarm button.
Press any button on the key fob within 10 seconds.
The turn signals should flash once to confirm synchronization.
Fob Battery Contacts: Ensure that the battery contacts inside the key fob are clean and making good contact with the battery. If there is any corrosion or dirt on the contacts, gently clean them with a soft cloth or alcohol wipe.
Fob Malfunction or Damage: If the key fob itself is damaged or malfunctioning, it may need to be replaced. Contact a Harley-Davidson dealership or authorized service center to obtain a new key fob and have it programmed to your motorcycle's security system.
Security System Malfunction: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a malfunction with the security system itself. In this case, it is recommended to contact a Harley-Davidson dealership or authorized service center for further diagnosis and repair.
It's important to note that the exact steps or procedures may vary depending on the model and year of your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Consult your motorcycle's owner's manual or contact a Harley-Davidson dealership for more accurate and detailed instructions tailored to your specific model.
If the charging light is on in your 1979 Harley Davidson XLH 1000 Sportster, it indicates a potential issue with the charging system. Here are some steps you can take to check for the problem:
Battery Check: Begin by checking the battery voltage using a multimeter. Ensure that the battery is fully charged, and its voltage is within the recommended range specified in the owner's manual.
Belt Tension: Examine the belt tension of the generator drive belt. If it is loose or worn, it may not be driving the generator properly. Adjust or replace the belt if necessary.
Wiring Inspection: Carefully inspect the wiring connections between the generator, voltage regulator, and battery. Look for loose connections, damaged wires, or corroded terminals. Ensure all connections are clean, secure, and properly connected.
Voltage Regulator Check: Test the voltage regulator using a multimeter. With the motorcycle running, measure the voltage output at the battery terminals. It should be within the recommended range specified in the owner's manual. If the voltage is too high or too low, it may indicate a faulty voltage regulator.
Generator Output Test: To check the generator output, you will need a multimeter capable of measuring AC voltage. Disconnect the generator output wire from the voltage regulator and start the motorcycle. Set the multimeter to measure AC voltage and connect the leads to the generator output wire and a good ground. The reading should be within the specified range mentioned in the owner's manual. If there is no or low voltage output, it may indicate a faulty generator.
Fuse Inspection: Check the fuses related to the charging system. Ensure they are not blown or damaged. Replace any faulty fuses with the appropriate rating.
If you are unable to diagnose or resolve the charging system issue using these steps, it is recommended to consult a qualified motorcycle mechanic or contact an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership for further assistance. They will have the expertise and experience to diagnose and repair the specific charging system problem in your 1979 Harley Davidson XLH 1000 Sportster.
