The fuel pump will only run about 5 seconds when the key is turned on if the oil pressure does not run enough psi. The system is controlled by a relay which is fused. Check owners manual to see which relay and fuse is used.
Hi Christopher, if you have made sure the fuse and relay are o.k. then i would suggest you check the the fuel pressure sensor located on the injector fuel rail.

I suspect you have a bad ground connection. It could be at the battery, at the engine, or elsewhere. You are correct, you should not read 12v on both sides of the fuel pump. One side should be at chassis/ground.
firstly check if you have a pressure sensor in the fuel manifold . If you have then it controls power to the ECM to the pump relay to the pump and switches the pump off when fuel pressure in the manifold is reached . Also check for a fuel emergency shut off switch that you may have to reset
this may be a few things that would cause this problem, first is the anti theft system, try another key first and see if it starts, if so then key is bad. the next step would be to scan the computer for any stored codes as these codes will help alot in find the problem, but if thats no a way due to the car not running then the next step would be to check for power at the fuelpump. if theres power at the pump then the pump is bad. you can try having someone beat on the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber hammer and at the same time try starting it and if it runs then replace the pump, if theres no power at the fuel pump then check all fuses first and then try swapping the fuelpump relay with another relay with the same numbers to make sure the relays are the same. start with these things first. good day.
Hello, You might try a Relay that controls the PCM or ECU. They would be in the Powerbox where the fuelpump Relay is. Some of the Relays are identical so you could buy 1 and it would be a backup part for several.
You should also look at the other things the Ignition switch turns on in the Run position. Does the radio work, the fan motor, or turn signals? If they do not work look at replacing your Ignition switch.
The PCM and ECU get their power indirectly from the Ignition switch. When all have power they will connect to the fuelpump Relay. Since you said you checked the Relays, I am taking that to mean you checked the fuelpump Relay only. Many times people do not know that there are several relays which all need to connect to get the fuelpump to run. When you determine the Ignition switch is good, then the ECU and PCM relays should be getting power. Have you tested the fuelpressure Regulator? It needs to demand fuel from the pump.
The fuelpump relay depends on the ECU or PCM relays to work. One of the 2 relays may be bad and preventing the fuelpump relay from working. When you get to trouble shooting the terminals you can get wiring diagrams online or the info may be in a book at the Autoparts store.
One of the benefits of using a Dealer with the hardest problems is the tools they have. They have machines with connectors that match every wiring connector inside your car. If one section is unplugged they can test the wire loom section by section until the problem is found.
I hope you have found my solution to be very helpful and that I have brought up a few new areas to try. If trying different parts does not help, you are left with a wire by wire battle to fix this and the Dealers' better tools may make more sense.
Alot of times a bad fuelpump will run with the extra voltage not often but sometimes, i would check the power voltage and ground at the fuelpump, this is the only way to know for sure, if you get 12 volts and have a good ground at the fuelpump then i would say the pump is bad, check all wires going to the battery, make sure there are no loose wires or connections at battery terminals and try changing the fuelpump relay with another one and see if that helps, a bad relay can also cause this, good luck.
This sounds like a weak fuelpump, i would start by having the fuel pressure testing, this sounds like theres not enough fuel getting to the motor, so start with the fuel pressure test, hope this helps.
