I have residual current draw on 1996 Ford Explorer. I traced it to fuse #25 (Speedometer and Gem System). Which is most likely? Can I (with battery disconnected) disconnect Gem, then reconnect battery to see if current draw gone? Any other ideas? Anyone seen this problem? Thanks for your help.

I tested as suggested and my draw dropped to 10 ma... which is lower than spec. At this point I will assume the problem is solved (actually was due to other circumstances). This is not my car, so as additional information has come to light. Thanks so much for your help

What did you find was wrong. We are having the same issue, did the same thing however we got another gem and it's drawing the same. Can you tell me what you found?

When checking a draw you have to wait to check till all modules have powered down including Gem module. This can take up to 30 min. Specs are 50 ma draw. To check get you a test light take off the postitive cable, " you can also use a meter", now you have to put the light in series withe the battery and cable. Clamp one side of test light to battery cable the other side to battery post WITH CABLE OFF THE WHOLE TIME. Now if you open doors turn any switches you will have to restart your 30min. then you can check and see if unplugging module, if that fixed problem. what we do is open the doors before, then take a screw driver and close the door latch so that you can get in and out of the car without turning something on

Location of the speed sensors on my 1999 ford explorer

Vehicle Speed Signal
The vehicle speed signal is generated by the rear anti-lock brake sensor and sent to the 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (4WABS) module. The 4WABS module sends the vehicle speed signal via circuit 679 (GY/BK) to all systems which require a vehicle speed signal input.
Speedometer
The electronic speedometer receives a speed signal from the 4WABS module.

I have a parasitic draw that kills my battery and has been diagnosed as coming from the GEM module. I have bought a new GEM and replace and reprogrammed it but I still have a parasitic draw. Any sugge

I would try a known good battery first. A marginal one will cause this type of problem. You can use the parasitic draw current and calculate your battery life. To do this you need to take into account all the parasitic current loads. Also it may take an hour for all loads to shut off completely. Be sure your GPS in disconnected. Disconnect each of the loads one at a time to find out which output is the culprit. This is a very difficult way of doing it but without the proper current measuring tools it is about the only way. When all loads are disconnected and it keeps on drawing then it is the GEM module itself assumning that is the line you are measuring. Not all replacements are good.

Hi, I have 1998 Ford F-150, 2wd automatic, V6. I seem to have a parasitic drain on the battery of about 4 amps, and I have traced it down to fuse #15 on the inside (the GEM fuse). Also, fuse #19 will drop...

GEM stands for General Electronic Module and controls a lot of non engine related things, such as power windows and locks. I had a 2000 ranger the other week I was working on with a bad one. To correctly test the GEM you need to hook up an amp meter to see the current draw. It takes the GEM about an hour to full power down. If your just sticking a test light on it, it may be miss leading you. Try hooking your test light up like you was testing and leave it like that for an hour without messing with the car, to see if the light is still lite. The best honest way to test is with an amp meter though. Should have .05 amps or less on it after an hour, anything more than that is a bad GEM.

The GEM in the ranger had to be programed by the dealer.

I have a 96 ranger and the ignition chime never shuts off. The only way to make it stop is to pull fuse #25 which is gem system and speedometer. What could the problem be? I'm thinking replacing the...

There are no codes for this. The issue may be that the gem is getting a driver door open signal or the gem itself is bad. I got a used gem at a salvage yard for $20 recently, but make sure its not the door switch first. You can pull the connector off the switch and use an ohmmeter to see if the wire is grounded. If it is, trace it to the gem to find where it is getting cut into.
