2005 Toyota Sienna Sliding Door Won't Open

The automatic sliding passenger door on my 2005 Toyota Sienna won't open. If you push the open button inside the car or on the fob you can hear the motor try to open but the door doesn't budge and the motor stops after a second. If you pull the handle on the inside or outside it doesn't open the door--it behaves just like it is locked. The lock slider inside the car shows the red sticker that indicates the door is unlocked, and if you try to slide it over to the locked position you can force it over but it comes right back to unlocked when you let go. It's like the locking mechanism is broken and the door is mechanically locked but electrically unlocked or something. Help?!

2004 sienna with the same problem. Details are that door handle was held open while vehicle was put in park. Now the lock in in between states.

My fix was to have dealer replace a disconnected cable which they found after taking door apart. It sounds like you have different symptoms though, you can actually move the door, so you may have a different problem.

I also am an owner of a 2005 Sienna with power sliding door problems. Same deal, press any button, and you can hear the motor strain, some click sound, but no motion. The door can be opened and closed manually with no problem, so there is no obstruction...

I vaguely remember a similar problem with my 2001 Sienna, which was under warranty at the time. The battery was replaced and the problem was fixed. Of course my current van is 6 months out of warranty....I imagine just to diagnose is going to be costly. Has anyone had success with a dealership giving an extension to the warranty for problems like this?

i have a 2005 sienna . and my power sliding door ,opens perfectly fine. Closing it, is the problem. While its closing it reaches half way and it just stops. what is the problem

    also note:
while the door is in MOTION to close, i push it little bit right around where it gets stuck, and the door would close perfectly. but if i dont give it that little push while is in motion. the door get stuck about the half way point.

I HAVE A 2004 SIENNA AND THE RIGHT SIDE PASSENGER DOOR IS AUTOMATIC. WE CANNOT OPEN IT AT ALL. WHEN YOU PUSH THE BUTTONS YOU CAN HEAR A CLICK BUT THE DOOR ACTS AS IF IT IS LOCKED. WE CAN'T EVEN OPEN IT MANUALLY. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

  • believer109 Apr 07, 2009

I have a 2004 Sienna, and the power door behind the driver won't open more than 6 inches. The car only has 46,000 miles on it. Ironically, someone I work with has the exact same car and had the exact problem. The power doors also freeze in the winter. My dealer wants to charge $1800 to fix it. It has become a safety hazard - if my children are in it and something happens, I cannot open the door at all - even manually. I am very disappointed in Toyota - I've done some research and obviously there are many people with the same problem on the internet and they should recall it. I personally will never buy a Toyota again. It was my first after being a Honda person for the past 20 years, and I will stick to a good thing.

I also can't open the door with the keyfob or any of the buttons-- you are stating it was opened when it wasn't in park-- how do we fix the lock that is inbetween?

  • Anonymous Mar 27, 2014

I can only open it from outside or by naster button at the top console

Hello,

I know your problem. I have the same problem. been a handy man I took the door cover a part. Here is what I discover:

1) I do not have to take the whole inside door apart completly. I can't any way becuase of a screw that can not access while the door is close.

2) Just as you and I suppected, the door locking mechnical is the problem. the locking mechnical works by having as slide button that when in lock mode, it slide down out of the way . without that button, the door handled can't engage the unlock cable. when the door is unlock the button slide up and allow the door to engage the lock cable and voila the door handle pull on the cable and unlock the back lock of the door slide.

I have 1 passenger power slide door and 1 unpower driver side door.

the power door is having problem. the unpower is ok

To understand how this lock and unlock work, do this:

1) on the unpower driver side door, unscrew 2 screw holding the plastic cover. fried the plastic off. it won't break any thing. when the plastic cover the door handle is open you can see how the lock and unlock will work. Basically there are 3 cables that the door handle pull when the door is unlock.
When the door is lock only 2 cable is pull. look carefully how the lock and unlock set up to engage the third cable. There is a white plastic button that slide up cause the third cable to engage when the door handle is pull to open . It is this white plastic button that broke off cause the third cable to fail to engage and release the slide door lock when the door handle and the power system for the silder door try to open the slider door.

2) now to open the power slide door on the passenger door manually, do this. under the steer wheel is a button that when press in and the ornage bar dispear , the power silde door become unpower. do this first. next fried the plastic cover the door handle off. You won't be able to get it off complete because of the 2 screw. But you will able to access the third cable and release it manually. To relase the third cable you have to push on the cable hard on the forward direction. See how the othe door work and you know. push on it hard. Once the door is unstuck remove the screw on the plastic. now you can remove the cover.

How to fix this is a problem. I just got this far yesterday. Here my plans

1) either toyota have this button and stock it and I buy it and try to replace it. or
2) have dealer replace it.
3) if this button is not available then I'll have to have a shop at my work mill up a aluminu button.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information above. Had the same problem with 2005 Sienna. The dealer said it was the door motor--so $800 bucks. Went to the local mechanic, who, more accurately, said it was lock mechanism: buying a new one (from Toyota dealer--$1200 bucks; labor $400.) Then I remembered seeing your post, so looked myself, and sure enough, the top of button broken off. I took out button, drilled a hole in the stub and inserted a fairly flat screw to sub for missing button top. Door works.

Did anyone get a part number for the button...my 2005 has the same exact problem....I will try the drill and screw method...a replacement part would be best

Replace locktransmission modual, its next to where you pull to open, sliding dooor, its a pain, but you can just buy the part and have a bodyman change it for you. this is a common problem, since this unit has some plastic, cheap parts, and if its use offen it will fail,or break,Big issue is the comlete panel has to come out to get to the units bolts, but bodyman are the best for job, or general mechanic, this is where the deales rip off people the most. New part cost about 275 to 400. dollars, it does not matter if its auto opening or manuel ,its the same issue

Both of my rear doors will not open. How do I initialize the doors? I have been told that the doors will open if you initialized them, because the battery has been taken out. Any suggestions?

I went out this morning and both rear doors would not open. It is 28 degrees outside. I was doing some reading and noticed a pattern with the doors and cold weather. Last night i did drive my van through a auto car wash. When I was inside of the van I pulled the handle like i was opening it and shoved my shoulder into the door. POP it opened up. Same thing to the other side. I then looked at the weather stripping it was all icy, It seemed to have leaked a little bit on both doors just enough to be able to freeze and hold those doors shut.

The car part stores and ealer do not sell this plastic button. The dealer parts dept showed me that the power door has a lock assembly for 100 that includes the part-for unpowered door they said you had to buy the complete inner door assembly for 395 (crazy). I will try to find some similar parts to build up in hardware store.

Replace the battery or reset the computer could work. My 2 cents.

SO what is the solution???

  • 1 more comment

Sorry, that was rude. I am having a similar issue with my 05 Sienna. Out of nowhere the passenger auto door just came to a working STOP. The button on Driver console, the FOB and the inside door button - DON'T work. If I pull the handle (either inside or out) it seems to release and then work. Oh, also, if you push one of the mentioned buttons while its in motion (when you release with the handles) it will work then too. When using the buttons it makes a type of "clicking" sound and motions like it wants to work, but is definitly locked somehow.

I went to Gateway Toyota in Toms River NJ (Don't ever go there) they are more then happy to sell me a diag but can't even "guess" without!

The Diag is $100, to be honest, I don't have it!

SO, what was the solution to your problems. They sound very similar! Please email me at [email protected]. I check emails more then posts! I will take whatever help I can get...

If I get any headway, I will move it on as well.

2005 Toyota Sienna LE Driver Side Power Sliding Door When the door is closed and latched, the motors makes noise, and the door moves the tiniest bit, but it doesn't open. The same happens in the fully...

Try this... it fixed my problem whereby the 2005 Toyota Sienna passenger sliding door would sometimes open and sometimes not, yet I could hear the motor trying to open/close it. It cost me 20 minutes and 10 drops of oil, not $1200.

First, get the door open. It took me two weeks of constant trying, but it finally opened.

Next, remove the plastic covering of the inside door handle this way: locate the two screws on the forward edge of the sliding door near the child-safety switch: (the switch is a small lever near the door latch, on the forward edge of the door) loosen and remove the two phillips screws, one above the child-safety latch, and one below.

Remove the plastic cover to expose the gears for the door open/close mechanism.

There's a bunch of intricate plastic and metal parts in there, all coated with white grease. I used some 3-n-1 oil to lubricate everything in there thoroughly, In my case, there was one part that was a little void of grease, hence it "stuck" occasionally.

Test the system. If it's Okay, replace the plastic cover, and re-install the screws.

Now my Toyota Sienna 2005 door never fails to open or close.

2005 Toyota Sienna XLE - Automatic sliding door not closing.

This may or may not work depending on exactly what is wrong with the door, I cant tell what is wrong without looking at it directly however:
You can try starting with all doors closed and unlocked, keys in hand disconnecting the battery and letting the vehicle sit for 2 min or so, then reconnect the battery. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the on position but do not start the van. Next press the button to disable the power sliding door for the drivers side, then manually open the door fully, wait 5 seconds, then close it manually fully. Press button the button again to re-enable the power sliding door, then try to use it with the automatic feature either by pulling the handle or using your remote, this may or may not work depending on if the door has somehow become de-initialized (it should work now) however if something is broken inside the door closing mechanism or door closed/open sensors, the door will continue to malfunction.
