I have a series 2 Frontera (2000) 2.2 Petrol Sport RS 4x4. This modelhas been known to have a nagging fault which is a non operatingspeedo. Some people say that it is the fault of the PCB in thedashboard, and could possibly be a crack or dry solder joints. However, does anyone have knowledge of this fault? and if so couldanyone point me in the right direction for more information? Prior tolooking at the board, does anyone know how to test if the speedo dialitself is working? ie the system is electronic.
Themanufacturers do not acknowledge that there has been faults of thisnature. Hence it is difficult to get any sense from the Main Dealers ie they tend to change the board, and less that one year later you areback where you started from, minus a big wad of cash :(
Grateful for any information.
Cheers
Alex
ps I put this under the Ford Fusion grouping as the Frontera is sold under another name in the US. but I am not sure what it is called and who distributes it.
Hello i had the same problem with my 1999 frontera b 2.2l sport i took instrumentcluster out and the bottom connector with the solder connector lines on the circuit board that the dials are on not the plastic circuit board just get a solder iron and melt the solder agan to make it fresh andclean again now all the instuments work again including the speedo that wasn't before and it fixes the problem that the dials would only work when the headlights were on try this and you won't be disapointed i can now see the peed that iam doing :) am very happy
Hi, i have just bought a frontera that has gone through 2 speedos in the past (doesnt help with gauging miles) but this is a problem with these cars so you need a need speedo head put in.
Help :) plz frontrea speedo ,fuel, rev count , temp gauge not working , change unit still the same any ideas thanks :)
Hi I've gone through all the stages you lot have and the best permanent fix I've found is to get after market dials and rewire the whole lot u can get the wiring diagrams off Google and it is a lot easier than u would think
Tim Moore. You are a star!!!!! I had the same problem speedo not working and I did what Tim suggested and now it works a treat.another tip I found was to bend the contacts on the plug out a bit more to get a tight fit against the solder. :-) happy happy happy!!!!

Some months ago (Dec.2000 Frontera 2.2dti) fuel gauge stuck on full and speedo kept sticking on zero. I got an auto electrician to take out the board & re-solder any dry joints on the board. Great ...the fuel gauge has been fine (fixed) for some 2 months now (for £20). ...but still a problem with the speedo, it keeps randomly sticking on Zero. Sometimes when you press the trip-meter reset button the speedo jumps in and works for 4-5 miles before going back to "sleep" again (on zero). Back to auto-electrician ..replaced a faulty diode (they can set up the board in a test rig/cradle to simulate driving mph etc so don't need to actually road test the car as they solder ! Still no joy ..with speedo though. Any thoughts?
yes i have the same problem i have a 2.2 tdi and the spedo does not work or it does when it wants to have you found out how to fix it yet email me back
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM , 2.2 DTI LIMITED , SPEEDO AND FUEL GAUGE ONLY WORK WHEN THE HEAD LIGHTS ARE SWITCHED ON . BUT LISTING TO THIS ONE !!! .... HOLD YOUR FINGER ON THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS WHEN THEY ARE FULLY UP , AND THE SPEEDO WORKS PERFECT . ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS DRIVE ONE HANDED !! ;-) APPARENTLY A VERY COMMON FAULT WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE , UNLESS YOU CAN SOURCE A GOOD SECOND HAND ONE , BUT HOW LONG WILL THAT LAST ???
ANY INFO WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED .
Just bought a 2.2 petrol frontera and its doing exactly thet bummer thought it was just a loose fitting
I had the same prob I found that putting a new mode on the gearbox end sorted it for me
