Code p2189 and p2187 = air/fuel mixture too lean on both cylinder banks which in turn generates excessive emissions = failed inspection.
What can cause a lean mixture:
- Incorrect main charge signal
- Intake air system leaking
- Fuel pressure too low
- Volume supply of fuel pump too low
- Mechanical fault in injectors
- PCV valve leaks
- Leaks in exhaust system
- EVAP canister purge valve mechanically faulty (hangs open)
All these must be checked.
Testimonial: "thank you for your answers well beyond my spec but now i'll know what the mechanic is talking about sounds like no easy fix"
I had the same codes on my 2006 Kia Sedona. After reading another post I found out that the main cause is an air leak usually in the intake system. Pull the main hose between the mass air and thottle body and it had cracks in it allowing air to enter the system. Bought a new air intake hose from the local Kia dealer for around $50.00 and it made all the codes go away.

I have p2187 system too lean at idle bank 1
P2189 system to lean at idle bank2
P0151 o2circuit low voltage bank2, sensor 1
Dwhen I got these codes in that same vehicl3 it turned out there was a crack in the rubber hose that goes from the air filter to the engine block. Once I replaced it ($50 part and the job only needed a phillips screwdriver and needle nosed pliers and 10 min). I pulled my battery which reset the light, then drove 100 mi to re-ready the computer and it sailed through inspection
