Jeep grand cherokee limited '96: check engine

Jeep grand cherokee limited '96:\r\n check engine light has come on, along with the check gauges light as well (only the check gauges light comes on when I am in accesories only). The oil gauge will drop to a quarter when i am at a red light for example, and will go back to the middle when i am moving.

If a warning light is on, there's a trouble code stored in the computer. There are well over 800-1,000 possible trouble codes in the average late model vehicle, so asking us to guess what's causing your problem without knowing the code is a complete waste of time. Get the code read. Post it here. THEN we can help

SOURCE: 2001 jeep cherokee cranks, no start, no bus

Crankshaft Position Sensor most likely, that's what it was with me. It is a pain to change so good luck. If that does not work you may look into: Camshaft Sensor, Fuel Pump/Filter, Injectors

SOURCE: 96 Jeep Cherokee WON'T start

i just had the same exact problems as zeeladys. It was the crank sensor shorting out and causing the short to shut down circuits in the pcm, volt gauge, fuel gauge, no spark. Locate the connector to the crank sensor, it runs beside the distributor, with the key to the on position unplug the connector and see if the gauges come back on. If so, simply replace the crank sensor and ur off and running

SOURCE: 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L Oil gauge reading very high

If the weather in your area is colder than normal, your startup oil pressure will reflect this, essentially because it is much thicker when very cold. This high reading should drop to "normal" once it reaches operating temperature. This condition can also be caused by a sticking pressure relief in the oil pump, usually caused by sludge inside the engine. If you regularly maintain your vehicle and use good quality oil, this should not happen. The oil pressure sending unit is also suspect, but in your case, I would not put it at the front of the list. If oil is close to "change time" consider using a good synthetic oil (synthetics flow better at extreme temps) or using a 5W anything oil during winter months. (see manufacturers specs)

What does it mean when the check gage light come on and the oil pressure hand goes to the zero mark? I have a 2000 jeep grande cherokee limited with 124,000 miles.

Either the oil level is very low or the engine bearings have failed (assuming the gauge is accurate) if the engine isn't making noise and the level is full have a mechanical gauge installed to check actual pressure. if good, the sending unit or gauge is faulty.
If in doubt, do not drive or run the engine 'tll the problem has been diagnosed.
