Saturn SL2 does not idle, revs, misses.... Did before I removed

Pulled off top cover on twin cam to check timing chain. After putting cover back on, engine idles erratic, revs up to 2000 rpm, or when in gear drops enough to kill the engine. Didn't run rough or do this before I took cover off. Have triple checked hoses, etc. looks like everything is in place.

1997 chevy cavalier 2.4 twin cam engine dogs out when throttling

Possibly bad tpos sensor

Bad idle air control valve

Bad maf sensor

Check the computer codes first before spending any more money on it

Also do a compression check

And check your valve timing and ignition timing just in case.

I took off valve/camshaft cover to reseal it. Now car idles rough, revs up, misses, changes RPMS.

Check the rubber hose the connects to the cover, it could be dry rotted from the heat and it just made it worse when you removed the cover. It could have cracks in it which you can not see. This is the only thing, unless one of the plug wires were damaged when you removed them.

Heavy ticking from top of motor on 1998 sl2. Thinking it's the timing chain at first but it is really sounding heavy on top of valve cover. Is it timing chain or valves. If valves what is likely cause....

Check your oil first. I guarantee your car burns oil and it may be very low on low. The ticking may be a lifter starved for oil or one that has debris in or on it. The timing chain usually makes a "slapping" sound when it gets slack in it from lack of tensioner adjustment.

A sure fire way to check the timing chain if you are concerned is to take off the valve cover (also a good time to replace the valve cover gasket). Then you can see the chain and feel and see if there is any slack in it.

1997 saturn sl2 dohc is there a timing belt or chain on it

These engines have a timing chain, not a belt. They also have nylon coated guides under the cover that wear. If you change the chain yourself, or have it done, check the guides as well.

2000 Saturn Sl2 twin cam PCV

Be careful about the PCV valve. If it's the wrong part, it can cause drivability issues. The grommet is important. It seals the valve to the crankcase vapors. Otherwise they leak out nullifing the purpose of the system. Also check on the other side of the valve that the hose back to intake manifold is not clogged or cracked.
