3.1 Engine Fig. 2: Power steering pump mounting detail - 3.1L engine 86888066.gif
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
  3. Unfasten the power steering pump-to-engine bolts.
  4. Pull the pump forward, then disconnect and plug the pressure tubes. NOTE: Place a rag under the pressure tubes to contain any excess power steering fluid.
  5. Remove the engine mount, and remove the pump. NOTE: To remove the engine mount, support the engine with a suitable jack by the oil pan. Make sure to use a thin piece of wood on the jack pad to disperse the weight and prevent oil pan damage. To install:
  6. Position the pump and install the engine mount. Tighten the engine support-to-mount bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm). Tighten the engine mount-to-body bolts to 49 ft. lbs. (66 Nm) and the nut to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm), and remove the jack from the oil pan.
  7. Unplug and connect the pressure tubes.
  8. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  9. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with the proper type and amount of fluid. Bleed the power steering system.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.

2004 Saturn Ion oil change

Oil drain plug is its on the back passenger side of the engine out of sight unless you under the car itself .

It's a cartridge filter that goes into a canister. You'll need a 32mm oil filter canister socket to remove the cover to access the filter. You can find it at PepBoys for less than $10 by the other oil change supplies.

Want to change our own oil in 2004 Saturn Ion and cannot find how to do it and what tools we will need?

Make sure your car is off and cool (cannot have been running for the last hour as the oil will burn)

Owner's manual will say exactly what oil and oil filter to use. Most stores have cross reference sheets as well

You'll need a socket wrench with an adapter for the oil filter and an adapter for the drain plug
You could get an oil filter strap as well instead of the adapter.

Remove the filler cap on the top of the engine....

Put a drain tray under the drain pan and remove the drain plug (it will leak oil out as you're loosening it). Do not lose the drain plug as you'll be using it still. Check plug to see if there's any extra metal on it (ie. engine parts are grinding) Let drain and then repeat for oil filter.

Once completely drained, put the plug back in and then poor a bit of oil into the oil filter and then reinstall the filter. Pour the required amount of oil in through the top of the engine and close the cap....
