99 S-series, 1.9L-SOHC, w/ oil in coolant. 136K mi, compression @ 167 to 172, & NO water in oil. Replaced headgasket & now no bubbles in coolant. Counseled ref to history of crack(s) in #3 or 4 cam journal on 1.9L-SOHC. Trying Slick-50 w/PFT to slow or stop oil loss into coolant. So far 0 oil loss for last week. Question: this only temp fix? Yeah. This is only a temp fix. GM has a bulletin warning against the use of Slick 50 w/PFT. It can clog oil passages

I would have the fluid tested to be sure it contains oil before going any further.

Everyone automatically assumes that oil and water mixing means a blown head gasket or cracked engine block. Of course common sense is usually not that common. Oil in coolant is a different problem than coolant in oil. The former is a low pressure leak, and could indicate only an intake manifold gasket. It could also be an early or small head gasket leak. Coolant in oil is usually a cracked block or torn head gasket, and has concomitant symptoms of white exhaust smoke and milky oil on dipstick. If you replace the head gasket and the problem persists, an intake gasket could have fixed the problem.

Get a remanufactured head. They've been tested and rebuilt. Many owners from several online forums had had good luck with a company that has an eBay store. I think they're called clearwater heads or something like that.

Also its not just 96-99 SOHC's, its 1991-2002 SOHC's. I'd personally swap in a DOHC.

2002 Subaru outback is leaking antifreeze and not heating up.
This is common issue early sign head gaskets failure for EJ251 SOHC engine for external coolant leak. Second gen 96-99 with EJ25D is worst because when head gaskets failed, it's an internal leak that allows coolant and oil mix together in the combustion chamber to destroy engine.
You can drive it for at least 6 months or more as long as you keep top up coolant since the leak should be small at a slower rate leak. I drove mine for a while before change head gaskets. You're looking at `$1000-1200 job a dealership since you might as well change the timing belt, water pump, idlers while engine is pulled to replace head gaskets.

Coolant and oil leak
have a compression test done as the bubbles suggest a blown head gasket or cracks. That will account for the overheating. The oil leak may be from the head gasket or cracks.

I have a 2003 Kia Sorento. I put a new thermostat in it but it still blows the antifreeze back through the reservoir and out the overflow. The is no antifreeze in the motor oil.
Hi, sounds like the headgasket as failed and is leaking into the water jacket in the cylinder head. with the engine running remove top off the reservoir and see if you can smell exhaust fumes coming from the bottle, there could be bubbles coming up aswell. if so replace the headgasket, good luck.

The engine misses on 3 and 4 and compression leaking into radiat
If you do in fact have compression (air) blowing in to the cooling systems this would show either a blown head gasket, warped head or cracked head. Please od not run the Rodeo until repaired as if coolant is getting in to the cylinder or oil (Your oil will look like chocolate shake) it can do severe damage. What motor please 3.0 V6?

Small bubbles in radiator and luid loss not in oil not fouling plugs just looses fluid where ?
It burning it ,you can check this with a bubble test,Use your overflow from your radiator cap unhook get a small clear bottle and put the hose in it start engine and let it get warm if you have bubbles in the bottle your getting compression in your coolant,more than likely a headgasket is starting to go bad, I hope this helps you?

A blown head gasket doesn't necessarily mean there is water in the oil. Check for bubbles coming into the coolant tank. Take car for a short drive to build up coolant pressure and you should be able to see where it is leaking from a bit easier. It is possibly coming from a heater pipe or core plug.

sounds like headgasket , when it si done you must make sure you fill with water and no aIR BUBBLES IN SYSTEM .i did one once took me 4 hours with a hose pipe ramming water into it heater matrix first then engine .i had a garage do the gasket 1st time they did not fill with water properly and it blew had to do it myself
