My Kia Rio will unlock for half a second and then shuts again. I can see a few pots that suggest it's might be a common problem but no solution. Can anyone point me in the right direction of the likley cause and fix

Hello,
1, Use fob to unlock and immediately open passenger door. This will give you access to bonnet release switch.
2, Open bonnet and remove 25AMP Door lock fuse
3, Spray WD40 on key- place in drivers door lock and gently try to open and close- do not use force. Half remove key and spray more WD40 into barrell. Keep gently playing until you can lock and unlock using key
4, Replace 25AMP fuse
5, It worked for me- hopefully for you also
This really helped me. I did not know where to look for the fuse so I tried WD40 in the lock and it fixed the problem immediately. Thanks for sharing your your solution, you have saved my hundreds of pounds that the garages would have needlessly taken from me to do the same thing. :O)

My problem was solved after putting a new battery in the key fob. Hope this helps someone.
I have posted about this problem before, on the Kia Forum, on our 04 Picanto. It only
occurs when there is a frost of several or more degrees below, like last
winter and now this winter up here in Central Scotland. I haven't cured
it yet but the first thing to do once in the car is to remove the
central locking fuse. This fuse box is below the steering wheel
by the door. The cover just pulls off. The fuse is the third one from
the left on the bottom row. It is marked on the back of the fuse box
cover. There is a fuse removal tool in one of the top slots in the fuse
box. Once done then individual doors and boot can be opened without
affecting the others so hopefully the passenger door will work okay. We
leave the fuse out during frosty weather. Also do not use the central
locking button on the key as you will set the alarm (on some models)
much to your embarrassment later.
As far as a cure goes I'm still working on it. A guy in a garage
reckoned it could be the wrong sort of grease on the lock latch so I
tried degreaser and a tooth brush several times. This on it's own hasn't
cured it. Next I've tried WD40 and deicer with some success as it was
-12C the other night and the passenger door opened fine but not the
driver's side. Maybe more degreasing? Who knows but it is very annoying
and my partner spent over an hour trying to get in previously when it
was -13C with a hot water bottle propped against the lock.
One other consequence of a stuck driver's door and climbing out the
passenger door, is that the lights-on alarm won't sound and the lights
won't be switched off either and hence a flat battery occurred.

How did you get the door open?
I can't unlock with the key either any ideas? wife is currently opening passenger door and sliding over to driver's seat to get in - doors lock again as soon as closed. hhhmmmmm
OK, this is a response for my post earlier & is primarily for the problem on the Picanto. I have now seen 7 posts worldwide about this problem - I spoke to Kia who said they have never heard of it (right). Anyways my outcome seemed to be the same as the others. I ordered a new lock mechanism (£60 (uk)) and it took an autoelectrician (who had done this before - again a picanto) 4 hours to force the lock - he managed to spare the door trim but the window glass broke. Once in replacing the lock took 20mins. The fault is the return spring on the solenoid unit that was broken - a simple fix. But for belt and braces we fitted the new unit. All in all the repair cost £200 inc parts - heaven only knows what it would have been at Kia at £69 per hour! (PS - it is very reasonable that the interior door panel could be severely damaged in forcing open the door - if it is then Kia charge £145 for a new one - yikes! - so 1 duff spring could set you back a minimum of £200 or up to £400. KIA SHOULD SORT OUT THE QUALITY CONTROL OF THESE DOOR MECHANISMS)

Central locking has stopped working
I got the same problem on kia rio but only if you try to open the door when it is locked, just unlocked with key then works fine
I have a Kia Rio. The central locking has suddenly started playing up. I cannot open the drivers door at all either from the inside or the outside. If I lift the knobs up and use the handles to open the doors quickly I can open both back doors and the passenger front but not the drivers door. I'm having to climb over to the passenger seat to get out or get in. I'm 62 years of age and on a pension so certainly can't afford to pay extortionate fees out for new locking mechanisms. Reading this page it seems to be a big problem with Kias.
It is often caused by a small spring that has stretched or broke which stops the lock springing back and forth to allow the door to lock and unlock. You will have to take the seat out to gain access to the screws of the door panel loose and the door panel as much as you can so you can get your hand inside to trigger the lock once you open the door it will be easier to completely take the panel off to see the problem look for the spring and replace

Unfortunately this Site hasn't been of any help but managed to fix by correcting jammed return spring part of the locking mechanism inside the culprit door

to open slip a thin wire down the window caviety & hook the latch lever
Correct that KIA SHOULD SORT OUT THE QUALITY CONTROL OF THEIR RIO DOOR MECHANISMS. Broken Solanoid spring inside latch mechasim is the problem. It fails to return when pulling on the door handle when it's locked. If not completely broken you might be able to open by openning closing over on over otherwise only way without risking damage is to slide a thin wire down inside of the window and hooking on to the tiny p;astic ring protuding from the latch mechanism. Look doiwn the inside edge you can see it. If you want to save the expense of replacing the mechanism connect any spring that fits one end to the same ring and the other end hooked just below the inside of the outside door handle just tight enough not to fall off or rattle and it should work fine.
