Hello, my 2002 Saturn SL2 is having starting problems. I recently (1 month ago) had the starter replace. 2 weeks ago it failed to start. The local repair shop replace the 30amp ignition fuse but found no other issues. yesterday it also failed to start. I changed the 30amp fuse twice but each time it blew right away. Plenty of juice for lights, radio etc. what else can be causing the short, a relay?? thanks Bill

SOURCE: 1993 Saturn SL2 Electrical Short?

Hello there ThreeD, Johnny

I wonder if we had the same dealership? If you are still having the start up problem, I have several solutions.

To Disable the Starter Kill:
( Tools: flashlight, wire stripper, Jumper wire w/alligator clips)

  • The most common intersect point is at the base of the steering column. Slide the seat back, tilt the wheel up and contort your way down there.
  • You should find two wires, usually the same color that look like an afterthought. One comes from up the column, the other, from the firewall. Where they go in the same direction, they are going to the alarm module.
  • The alarm module is usually under the center console. You don't need to dig it out, only confirm the two wires go to the module.
  • When confirmed, choose a spot where the wires are close together and strip about 1/8 inch of insulation from each.
  • To kill the Starter Kill: Use the alligator clip wire to connect the two wires.
  • Now try to start the engine.
What you have done:
  • When engaged, the starter kill interrupts the power going to the solenoid.
  • When disengaged, it allows power to the solenoid.
  • The relay the accomplishes this is sometimes not up to the task, resulting in scorched contacts.
  • Bottom line, the interrupt state never ends.
  • The jumper you attached takes the place of the damaged relay to the extent of allowing power to the solenoid
This is a quick inexpensive way to either fix the starting problem or rule out the starter kill as the weak link in the circuit.

Let me know the results. If necessary we will take it to the next level.hanks for using FixYa

SOURCE: '95 Saturn SL1 Intermittent Starting Problem

this is caused by burnt starter solenoid contacts, U can either replace the starter solenoid contacts (about $15) or u can replace the entire starter.

SOURCE: My 2000 Saturn SL2 will turn over but won't start

well sitting here in spain ,i have never seen a saturn only on the tv launching the spàce shuttle, but from the symptoms you describe ??if its car then its a number of things but i would be inclined to clean contacts on everything from the fuse ,relay, pump wiring connector on the fuel sensor assembly and put a bit of grease on all of them.If problem persists then remove the fuel sensor unit from tank and check wires from connector block to pump .If it still takes na few turns of key for pump to work then renew it .and the best of british with the spae rocket

SOURCE: 2000 Saturn SL2 - replaced ignition then BCM failed. Related?

the problem is not the bcm. the passlock security sensor is in the cylinder and housing, if the cyl and or housing was replaced the system must be relearned. if you replace the bcm you still need to relearn the system or it still will not start.

Could be starter, battery, battery cables, security key system module going bad, etc.
Check easiest things first. Battery condition and age, condition of cables, and connections at starter.

2002 saturn sl2 will not start for no apparant reason then 1 to 3 days later starts, while trying it 2-3 times a day. Towed to a garage both times and they could find nothing wrong.

Why couldn't they find anything wrong? The main componants should be tested first. (the starter, srarter relay, any related wiring, ignition switch, and all connections at battery, relay, fuse, starter, and eng. block). Good luck.

4th starter in 1 1/2 years on a 2002 sable

Ask the mech to dissassemble an old starter if it is not turned in for a core. If it is an oil leak are you using a lot of oil to keep it up to the full mark on dipstick. The copper windings in the starter may be soaked with oil, and the oil will attract road grime and dirt and be so clogged that the brushes cannot contack windings and clog up the whole works. Check to see if the valve cover gaskets are leaking down onto starter, they may have vibrated a little loose and just need tightened or replaced. Can really be the only thing that would go wrong with the starter, unless your battery is way to small or way to big. Check CCA, Cold cranking amps with the owners manual for replacement battery size.
