Hi. As an engine ages, its timing chain stretches. In fact, this is really the main obstacle to long engine life. Some engines will experience piston-to-valve interference if the timing chain or belt skips or breaks. These engines are called non-freewheeling or interference engines. When this happens on a push-rod engine, push-rods will usually bend. Valve timing can become retarded (late) when a timing chain becomes so worn that it skips a tooth, as well. This will cause a slight tap, or valve noise. Late valve timing will cause poor low rpm performance. At higher rpm, engine performance might be acceptable.

If the timing chain has skipped and valve timing is retarded, suction will be felt at the exhaust pipe. This happens because the exhaust valve is still open during the piston's intake stroke. Valve train noises can also come from inside the timing cover. It can be caused by a bad timing chain or a loose sprocket or gear. The noise usually is a rattle or knock that becomes louder when decelerating.

For engines with a timing chain tensioner, a worn chain can become loose enough on the sprocket to rattle whenever the engine floats or cruises between load and coast conditions. In severe cases, a chain can actually wear a hole in the timing cover resulting in an oil leak. Severely worn cam bearings can also be the cause of excessive timing chain slack. Depending on the design of the lubrication system, this problem can also be accompanied by low oil pressure at idle.

Your 3.0 uses a belt, not a chain.....if you have more than 85,000 miles on the belt, it could go any time.....engine destruction is likely.

I have a 2002 Saturn Station wagon LW200 does it have a timing belt or a timing chain and where is it located at

If it has the 4 cylinder (2.2L) engine, it has a timing chain. If it has the V6 (3.0L) engine, it has a timing belt. The timing chain or belt is located under the timing cover at the 'front' of the engine -- the end of the engine where the serpentine belt is located.

3.6Liter? :USA. . but not all countries. non stated by you.
there are 4 engines, which one. 2.8L up.
I got bad news for you , there are 8 sensors, 4 cams.
each cam has 2 sensors, why not use a scan tool and not guess.
2pin and 3 pin sensors too. in sets.
FOR SURE>!
the chain are bad now, 12 years old sloppy timing.
the sensor complain first, and are not the sensors fault most the time. find shop that can check your set of V6 chains.

Symptoms of timing chain being off 2001 Saturn L200

When a timing chain is off an engine, it will not run and probably won't even crank and if it is an interference engine there will be damage to the valves (at least).

When a timing chain is badly worn the idling engine usually produces the very distinctive timing chain rattle (but not always).

If you suspect the valve timing is maladjusted, the timing should be checked and adjusted if required, replacing any worn components...
Some engines will not tolerate any maladjustment of valve timing without sustaining damage.

Some engines are quite happy to run with retarded valve timing though power output suffers but sometimes mid-range power can be improved. The exact symptoms depend on how much the valve timing is maladjusted.

Do these cars have problems with the timing chain? Just bought a 2002 saturn l200 with 145,000 miles on it for a very good price, car runs great, should i be concerned about the timing chain? Thank you

to be honest im not sure if you have a timing belt or chain if its a chain i would not worry about it going bad on the other hand if its a belt they do recomend that you have them checked around 100,00 miles. shop around for the best deal and if they tell you it needs changed make them show it to you and tell them you want to compair it to a new one so you can see if its worn out for yourself. never just take there word..it can be a little expensive...

When does the timing belt have to be changed on a 1997 Saturn SL? What are the symptoms of needing to change the timing belt? My car has about 94,000 miles on it and I'm the original owner. Thanks!

the 91-98 saturns all had the same engine block, one of the many good features of saturns. Main difference is which head is on the block. They have a timing CHAIN and somewhere around 100,000 would be good. I had one go on a DOHC at 145k and the symptom was a very loud whirring coming through the dash, I got to it just prior to failure. Obviously the valve timing is sloppy with a stretched chain and many bad things can happen when your crank is turning but not the camshaft. Conversely I replaced the chain on a SOHC at 170k and it had little stretch. While you are in there, do the water pump, the chain guides/tensioner and the oil pump is at the bottom.

Engine noise that makes my 2002 Saturn Vue V6 AWD sound like a diesel. Could it be a rocker arm that needs adjustment? If so, what repair cost am I looking at?

it could be a rocher arm, or it could be the timing chain tensioner, mostly it the rocker on those they make it sound like the motor is going to blow, to have the rocker checked and adjusted i beleive is about $180.00. good luck.
