Lost all forward gears but still have reverse it is in a 2012 GMC Sierra, all coils seem to be good have 28 homs ,oil not burnt ,what can be the cause , the tranny is a m30 or a 4l60e

  • Jakes Auto Care Oct 17, 2019

Most likely the year planetary drive broke or has striped out. The transmission will need to be tore down. The 4l60E even with the harness disconnected would still have forward movement without shifting.

Check your transmission. Look underneath the truck and see if you see moisture around the transmission pan. If you see any indication of that, you may have a huge issue on your hands. Your reverse gear is seized to the Drive Gear. However hopefully it's something like needing a new clutch or a clutch adjustment

4WD! the transfer case is not stuck in neutral is it? Fluid levels are good? Have you noticed a decrease in mileage or power prior to this problem? If no then time to take it in for service it sounds like. Transmission fluid is not consummed, so if it leaked out then you may be able to fill it up and get the leak fixed, if too late then its a rebuild on the tranny.

the linkage is just a slight bit off, it parks between gears when you shift into the slots. Disassemble the shifter from the center console, and slowly move just the cable its self between the positions and see if you have forword gears. When you find and sync the gears, then tighten the cable to the shifter so the positions match the notches in the shifter.

It sounds to me like your transmission is not well. It's working when the fluid is cold but not as it warms up. Pull the dipstick and check your transmission fluid for color and smell. It should be pinkish and smell like oil. My guess is that it will be closer to brown than pink and have a burnt oil smell to it. It the transmission is full, check the level with the trans warm, engine running, in neutral.I'd be shopping for another transmission. If the fluid is below the add mark, you an usually buy yourself some time on the replacement by changing the trans fluid and filter. At the same time add a transmission treatment with the new oil,I've had good luck with Lucas. Hope this helps.

98 GMC , Reverse slips

Hi there. This is a common problem with these trans. Its the forward clutches that good bad.First and reverse are together in the same pack The reason it slips when its warmed up is that the fluid is thicker and wont slip by the clutches until it is warmed up.A good way to check this is to look at the dip stick and if it has blackish gray cooler stuff on it it is for sure the clutches. Also if your at a stand still with the truck and in drive if you punch the gas does the rpms race up.The a good indication the the trans is going bad.I hope this helps you and Have A Great Day.
