Transmissions usually last in the 250,000+ area depending on how you drive and maintenance intervals and if you are constantly pulling/weighing it down with heavy loads that being said now answer those questions okay next/// is it just overdrive and no other problems exist ? // there are shift pack switches inside the transmission and there's a switch on/off on your gear shift lever (button) I'm assuming you know this put try pressing the button in when driving it's possible that the overdrive bulb blew out and you don't know that your switch was deactivated or that switch went bad inside the gear shift lever so please check this and there's a fuse for it also next if all check out its possible that the overdrive switch in that pack inside the transmission has failed and the whole pack needs to be replaced but I don't think so because that switch has 2 sides/// 1-2 gear - 3-4 gear and your making it to 3rd so it's working but it could be ? But I think the problem is in that lever switch either it's deactivated or it just went or the wire from it that plugs into the connection under or on the column has broken but please check everything first before you start $$$$$$$ chasing the wrong thing like I said the bulb could be burned out and you don't know it's flashing OD OFF and understand that I don't know how much you actually know about these things and I have to tell you all of it because obviously I'm not there to check myself and also ask you questions ok if you don't have the manual go to ford owners.Com and download the full version of the manual for free then go to roadside emergencies and your fuse box diagrams and values are there and the relays locations ok there are also pressure solenoids to but I'm sure that there working also go to rockauto.Com and look up your vehicle and then go to automatic transmission and you will see all good luck stephen

Your transmission fluid contain water, thats why the colour of the fluid changed to pink. And of such the clutch is slipping causing the engine to reve up before shifting - Check transmission cooler.

SOURCE: won't shift into overdrive

these cars are a 4 speed auto
it you here the car change 4 times then it is going in to od
best way to try this is by following

  1. go to an open rood where you can do 100kph (60mhp)
  2. have your overdrive turned off (there should be a light on the dash board that comes on)
  3. then turn over drive on and see if the RPM drops
if it dose not work let me know and i will try my best to help you

SOURCE: 2000 Chevy Prizm Lsi 4-speed auto trans. problems

That does sound like a linkage adjustment problem.

If that does not work, I'd try a fluid change and filter. But your diagnostics with pulling on the gear shifter is a pretty good indication of a linkage problem.

Why does the overdrive light keep blinking in my 98 Ford Explorer?

When the overdrive lamp flashes it's a warning that the transmission has a concern that is either internal or external (wiring, computer). A scan will need to be performed to determine which part of the transmission is at fault. Many auto parts stores will perform a free scan however many cheaper testers will not pick up transmission codes. The overdrive servo in the Explorer trans has often caused problems with the return spring breaking. This is a repair that can be made without removing the trans. Another concern could be a shift solenoid not operating properly. The trans pan would have to be removed to address a solenoid issue. Internal gears/clutches are also a possibility. Repairs for this concern could run from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Diagnosis would run from $0 - $150.00. Good luck.

2002 Ford Explorer 5R55W transmission had intermediate band and servo piston replaced. Shifted OK for 1-2 months, then developed 2-3 shift flare. Servo bores then rebushed. Helped, but still has...

Band adjustment is very sensitive on these units, I set both adjustments at one turn. This is a 4 speed trans that has been converted to a 5 speed by turning on the od unit ( 1-2 shift ) in first gear.the 2-3 shift is busy because the od band is coming off causing the od unit to transfer back to 1:1 and the intermediate band is coming on . I have found that if the overdrive band is to loose it will release to fast causing a flare on the 2-3 shift bot not really affecting the 4-5 (overdrive) shift. So break both band adjustments loose and tighten the adjustment screw down and back off 1 turn the tighten jam nuts. Also the fluid level should be checked with the transmission warm ( 100 f , not hot, not cold) and the fluid should stream out of the check tube. Transgo makes a really nice vb kit that i use that will help these symptoms.

4-speed auto trans wont shift into 2nd gear or overdrive

Sounds like you've lost one of the bands, more than likely the overdirve band. It's the weakest part of the trans and does most of the work if you're normaly a highway driver. Could also be a clutch pack or sprag, but since you have 2 forward gears I would shy away from either of those failures. I would suggest removal and inspection. Do not drive it any more, as if it is the overdrive band, the only thing you're doing is tearing up the internals of the case by driving it. This will eventualy make the transmission core unrebuildable.

Have a 97 caravan (grand) and it runs normally when it first starts from cold.. goes about 15 miles .all gears shift fine on highway then all of a sudden it drops out out overdrive (4 speed auto) and will...

Caravans are known for transmission failures. Sometimes it's just a speed sensor or computer problem, but most of the time you need a rebuilt trans. Don't fall for the trans flush might fix it story. On older or high miles trannies, flushing can cause more problems than it solves. Find a good trans shop not just your regular garage and have them take a look. If you do need a rebuilt trans look up engine and trans rebuilding shops in the yellow pages or google. Buy it directly and save a lot of money. If you regular garage won't install it for you then find an independent mechanic that will (some garages won't let your bring in your own parts because they lose all the money they make by marking up the cost of parts).

1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem

Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.

Automatic transmission problem

Your vehicle should have the A4LD trans. Some of those small Bronco's had C-5....3 speed, lockup trans in them.If yours is indeed the O.Drive trans,4th gear in that trans is totally mechanical and hydraulic control. The only electricals in that year trans is lockup apply inside the torque convertor, and that happens after the 3-4 upshift.Later version DID have a solenoid for 4th gear.4th gear consists of the Forward clutch pack applied, and the front band,or O.D. band. This band is applied with a servo piston. It is a steel core piston with a pin and a rubber bonded covering with molded in lip seals. These servos are known for the rubber hardening, and no longer applying the band.Sometimes the band gets burnt to the point of no good, but installing a new piston is possible without removing the trans.Other than the servo piston,or without checking the valves in the valvebody, pretty much the trans would have to come out and be inspected.Good luck.j
