sounds like the fuel pump is bad. check the fuel pressure with a gage is should be 35lbs. if it still won`t start now have someone try to start it while you hit the fuel tank bottom with something if it starts the pump is no good.
The way to prime the fuel pump is to turn the key on.This will make the pump run for 2 seconds then turn off.Shut the key of for 10 seconds then turn it on again. You may have to do this a couple of times to get the fuel to the throttle body. Also when you turn the key to the start position the pump will run til you let go of the key.Hope this helps.Good luck.
You must have a leak or one of the lines are clogged. The reason it stays running when your on the gas is because it keeps the fuel pressure up. Then when it shuts off it loses all pressure in the line and the pump cant handle the initial start with the leak in the line.
Its called the fuel pump cylinoide which is attached to the fuel pump. Unless the fuel pump is bad, you got an expensive part to buy around $2500 or the cylinoide is $900 whichever is broken. This is a know issue for GMC deisel suburbans 6.5.
