Dome lights won't turn off

I am working on a 1997 blazer four door. The dome light stays on all the time. i have replaced both front door plunger switches, the dome light on/off wheel and the interior lights and accessory module under the dash and all fuses are good. the dome lights still won't turn off unless i unplug the fuse. I have been told that it could be a shorted wire somewhere but have checked all the obvious places. I am quite good at fixing cars, but wiring is my weak spot. I don't know what else to do. any help would be greatly appreciated

Been having a problem with the dome lights on a 99 chevy blazer. Still can't figure out what the problem is. There is a dome light overide button located under the dimmer wheel. When I push the overide button in the dome light goes off, but when I open any of the doors the dome light will not come on. When the overide button is out the dome light stays on all the time and will not turn off even though every door is closed. I checked all the pushbuttons and everything tests good. Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it?

My 95 Blazer dome light will not go off unless the rear dome light is manualy shut off (switch located by light) It had me scratching my head for a few.

  • Russell Scheller Nov 01, 2010

I have the same problem. When I pushed on the driver side door from the outside or pulled in on the door from the inside the light would go off. It turned out to be corrsion of the door latch on the frame of the car preventing the negative electrial circuit. I welded the frame of the latch to restore the connection and it was fixed. The latch of the door when closed to the metal bar on the frame has to make a negative electrical connection to indicate the door is closed. Check all four doors and hatch to ensure corrsion has not prevented the negative electrical ground.

The door switches may need adjusting; but yes, it could be a short on the NEGATIVE side.

1. Need at least two persons.
2. open two doors and manually push both plungers. Does dome light go off?
3. close one door, open a different door (2 doors open)
4. Repeat plunger test.
5. You must test two doors at a time.
6. If you can get as many persons as you have doors (including the tailgate); then you can test all plungers at the same time.

If this doesn't solve it; then you have a "negative" short:

1. One of the door wires is corroded. Remove each door switch and tug each switch wire out; one door at a time to see which one causes the light to stay on or turn off. (Leave each door open with the switch / wire hanging out as you test all doors). Do not put them back in or let them touch "ground" during the test.

LAST:
2. The wire near the dome assembly may be corroded. Remove the dome assembly and let it hang out. The light should go OUT when all door switches / doors are closed.

Hope this helps.

My back hatch was closed, but not tight enough to trip the light switch, therefore, the lights stayed on all night and I had to charge my battery to start up...
Lesson learned - always make sure the hatch closes tight..

I own a 1997 buick skylark and the dome light stays on

Check 3 things;
  1. The Switch on the Dome Light itself
  2. The Light Dimmer Switch on the Dash
  3. The Door plunger switches
Any of these can make the light stay on.

The rear cargo light won't turn off. This happened after I replaced a rear turn signal tail light bulb and a fuse for the horn. (These went out at the same time.) When the blinker light and horn were...

Hello! The instigator of this problem appears to be the the rear cargo lamp; Official name is rear dome light. You'll need a multimeter set on the X10 ohm scale to shoot this trouble. Leave the rear dome light bulb out. There are two switches involved; #1 the rear dome light on/off. #2 the right hand front door switch.

Pull the horn fuse out, remove the rear dome light cover, drop the rear dome light down to access the wiring and close all doors on the vehicle. Connect one lead of the ohm meter to the white wire and the other to body ground. If you read any resistance one or both of the two switches (dome light switch or right hand front door switch) is remaining closed when all doors are closed. Next disconnect the black lead from the dome light switch and see if reading changes to zero. If it does this is indicating that the dome light switch is defective. If it does not, disconnect the right hand door switch and take another reading at the same location. If you still measure any resistance, the black wire of the rear dome light is shorted to ground, if not then the right hand door switch is the culprit.

The reason the right hand door switch and not the left hand door switch is involved is the fact that opening the left front door would turn on the front dome light as well as the rear light. If both dome lights are staying on with all doors closed I would then involve both door switches in this test procedure. If your vehicle is a four door model then disconnect one door switch at a time while performing this test procedure.

The horn fuse also supplies power to the rear dome light, and I suspect the two events are related.

My inside coursty and dome light stays on when i open the door. i took the fuse out to keep the battery from running down but the horn and back door latch works off of the same fuse. its a 1996 blazer.

There is a dome override switch located below the head lamp switch make sure it is in the off position - if it is ok - open the driver side door look on the side on the instrument panel for a little black plunger - that is the switch for the dome lamp and courtsey lamps if it is broken or not there this will cause the lights to stay on. It will have to be replaced if it is broken or missing.

Dome lights

You don't have the dome switch in the on postion do you? If not, the headlight/dome switch may be the problem. It's very seldom that the door pressure switch is the cause of this problem.
