gas in an ac system is put in according to recommended pressures on the gauges used
find the leak first then use the correct gauges to fill the system or simply get an ac specialist to gas it up correctly
will save on compressor overload and burst hoses

There's a label under the hood that tells you exactly how much. I would expect 3 lbs, but you may need a bit more to clear the bubbles in the sight glass. You can't get freon 12 any more, so you may have to change a few parts to make 134 work.

If you have front and rear air you will need 2.2 lbs of R-134a. If you have front air only you need 1.68 lbs of R-134a. you will also need to use pag oil to refill the system, front and rear system uses 7.77 oz of pad oil and the front only system uses 7.1 oz of pag oil. How many bottles of refrigerant a volvo s80 takes?
That's a REAL GOOD question! The factory refrigerant charge specifications for your vehicle is 2.20 Lbs. of R-134A. Freon R-134A comes in 12 oz, 14 oz, 16 oz, 19 oz, and 22 oz cans (as well as 30 Lb Cylinders) - it depends on which brand/size can you are buying, whether your system is COMPLETLY out of freon, or whether it still has some freon in it.

The best way to deal with the situation (in my opinion) if you are going to try and charge you own A/C system is to purchase a kit that comes with a gauge. A company called interdynamics has a real good kit available that comes with a reusable gauge. Once you have the gauge, all you have to purchase in the future is the freon itself. By using the gauge, you can more accurately charge your system without the worry of possibly overcharging. (Overcharging can cause extremely high pressures that can do serious damage to your vehicle or cause personal injury.)

Anyway, this kit is available at O'Reilly's as well as other auto parts retailers. Here is a direct link to see the kit at O'reill'ys web site.

It depends on what size cans of freon you are getting and if the system has been retrofitted for R-134A refrigerant (1992 came originally equipped with an R-12 system). The factory specifications call for 1.8 Lbs. of R-12. If it has been retrofitted for R-134A, the general "rule-of-thumb" is 85% of the R-12 specification is needed to charge the system with R-134A. So if we do the math: 1.8 Lbs (R-12) X .85 (R-134A) = 1.53 Lbs. R-134A needed for a full recharge (providing the system is COMPLETELY empty. Then you will have to find out how much is in each can that you plan to buy and do the math to figure out how many cans you need. (some have 12 oz., some have 14 oz., some have 16 oz., some have 19 oz. and some have 22 oz.)

Usually it will take 2 or 3 cans of 134a to charge a typical American car's or light truck's a/c system.

There are about 454 grams per lb. of matter and each can is about 12 oz. (not 16 oz. = 1 lb.).

3 cans would be 3 cans x 12 oz. = 36 oz. or about 2 lbs. 4 oz.

If you round down to 2 lbs., then the grams is about 454+454 which is about 900 grams rounded down.

You could find the grams per ounce and multiply by 36.

454 /16 = 28.375

and 28.375*36=1021 grams for 3 12 oz. cans of refrigerant.
