The B6 CVT transmissions have problems with premature wear which can lead to failure and require regular fluid changes about every 80,000km.
So if the Range switch mentioned in the first answer (F125 switch?) doesn't fix the issue, and your transmission is a CVT, try a fluid change.

CVT's were fitted to small capacity Front Wheel Drive variants (2.0 petrol or smaller).
If you have Quattro, Turbo, higher capacity or Diesel engined variants, they may not be CVT.

IIf the vehicle is front wheel drive and now Quattro than then the transmission range sensor is located inside the transmission and is part of the mechatronics unit (valve body). If the vehicle isn't Quattro then the transmission range sensor is bolted to the drivers side of the transmission where the cable connectors to the shift lever. When these range sensors go bad that will cause the flashing or solid PRND light on the cluster.

SOURCE: Have an audi a4 1.8T Cabrio. Battery went dead,

I had the exact problem with my A4 2001 1,9 TDI but i just turned the car on, then first turned the steering wheel to the left as far as it goes, then to the right (i dont know if this is necessary but this is what i did). After i drove for few meters, the light went off and it worked normally.

2004 vw beetle PRNDS lights started flashing and car slipped into neutral

Sounds like a problem with the selector switch. It is unlikely to be gearbox issue. I suspect the gearbox is being "told" to go into neutral!

Back to the dealer with that one so they can do a can bus test on the selector lever...

My car is an audi a4 automatic sometimes it will not reverse and dashboard gearbox display flashes

Sounds like what happened to our 2004/A4/Cab., twice. both times the dealership replaced the transmission contol module. The second time it was repolaced with about 55,000 miles, out of warranty, I was able to get the dealership to replace this transmssion control module uner the 100,000 mile emissions warranty. So good luck.
