Question about Volkswagen Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Hello, I have a 1998 gas Volkswagen beetle 5 speed. I took out the old hood release cable because it was broke and I'm putting another cable in and I absolutely cannot get it through the firewall to the inside of the car. if there is a diagram or instructions on how to do it ...it is nowhere to be found on the internet nowhere at all, it must be top secret. no matter which way I push the cable or even a thin piece of baling wire to find the hole that I can get it through it just hit the wall there's no way I can get this cable through I thought it was something simple that's why I never pulled the new cable through with the old one but I should have realized it's a German car and they're absolute junk but if anyone knows how to put a new hood release cable in through the firewall I would appreciate your help I'm glad I got this car for nothing I've got to fix something on it and then I'm getting rid of it thank you

There may be 2 holes that don't exactly match, pull the insulation on the inside bulkhead or firewall down to locate the hole then push a small Phillips screwdriver through the hole and push it back and forth to make the hole a bit bigger then look under the hood to locate the hole and install the cable. I hope this help. Take care.

where can I get a common through

There is no possible way to get your hand underneath the dashboard and to try and take out even a small section of the dashboard doesn't even help if it possible to even get it out in the first place

it is super tight space under their you cannot see anything you cannot do anything I've taken the windshield wipers off and the plastic cowl and all I see under there is probably what is the computer and you can't even see a hole getting down inside of the car..... you couldn't pay me to keep a German car

I'm going to have to get a drill extension and drill a hole and try and route the cable down there from under the hood where the windshield wipers are because after taking everything apart you cannot see any hole anywhere where that cable goes through underneath the windshield,, all there is is the little hole where that rubber grommet that the cable goes through
I thought maybe there was some standard installation procedure to put this Cable in

There is using the old cable, I think you’re correct using a drill just check for wiring on both sides, I wish I could be there to help but like you said no room. If you drill through you can use rtv sealer to fill the hole

Thanks Mike I'm going to try and drill a hole in a little while I just bought an extension
I'll let you know if that works or not going to do it real careful cuz I don't know what's on the other side and there's no way to see what's on the other side

I solved the problem I had to get a one foot long drill extension and even that wasn't really long enough al longer extension would work better because the hinges of the hood get in the way and the area that you're drilling is on a slant (those Germans think of everything) I drilled a hole and pushed a piece of thin bailing wire through it and then hooked the end of the cable under the hood to the baling wire and pulled it through from underneath the dash , then hooked it up to the latch assembly. I had to put a sheet metal screw over the cable in the latch assembly to make sure it doesn't come back out because it's not made right in the first place .I have pictures but I don't know where to post the pictures on here anymore ....this site could use a lot of work

well I wrote that I solve the problem if there's no way to add pictures if you're posting a comment and and this site apparently no one checks you see that it's easy to use I can't even find my old comet

I'll try posting one more time sorry I can't have pictures ....you need a 12" drill extension... longer one would be better because the hinges of the hood get in the way.. drill a hole in the firewall (be careful when you're drilling to not push the drill all the way through you might hit something under the dash you don't want to so be careful) which is on a slant which is difficult to do (those Germans think of everything) push a piece of baling wire through the hole and then pull it out from underneath the dash and then hook the bailing wire to the cable under the hood and carefully pull it through till it's underneath the dash... attach it to the latch assembly under the dash and put a sheet metal screw(drill small hole) over the cable so it doesn't pop back out again because it's a very bad design

1998 VW Beetle 5-speed trouble getting it in to reverse

I have a 1998 VW Beetle and when I first bought it, (used) shifting into first was the same action for shifting into reverse. They were so close I usually went into first when trying for reverse. I took it to a transmission shop and they replaced part of the shift linkage that is famous for wearing. It cost me maybe $60.00. Now she shifts like a new car.

Broken tab to hood release cable

Get a long screwdriver and try to release the secondary latch that way. Or if you have small hands reach up under the hood and pull the secondary latch toward the left.
